Even if you hate the time change to daylight savings time...you gotta admit that you DO like the weekend we get to reclaim that "lost" hour. I suspect many of us look forward to it mostly for the extra hour of sleep we can squeeze in, but I would imagine among our Blues News readers we have at least a few who find a way to make that regained hour really count. No matter what you do with it, here's to hoping you enjoy!
Last weekend's Ozark Blues Society's 2017 Blues Challenge is now just a memory. But for the band and solo artist who came away our winners, it is just the beginning of the story! Read on below to find out who won this prestigious competition. Below you will also find information about an OBS co-sponsored event coming up November 18th in Fayetteville. An Evening with Bob Margolin (from Muddy Waters Band) should be an amazingly intimate night with this highly respected blues sideman.
Also we are in the last few days to take advantage of the extended deadline for the 2017 International Songwriting Competition. Read on below for links to assist you in finding out more about this cool opportunity.
As always, I encourage you to keep an eye on the calendar below. I put some unique opportunities in every now and again to remind you we really have a healthy and exciting music community
in Northwest Arkansas.
As always you can always drop me a
note and let me know of upcoming shows and events as well as ideas of what you would like to see in this Newsletter.

An Evening With
Bob Margolin
with Special Guests: Earl Cate, Terry Cagle, and Liz Lottmann
|
An Evening with Bob Margolin will reveal the inside stories of the career of a Grammy-winning bluesman. He'll perform music from his lifelong career, starting with his sideman adventures with Muddy Waters, all the way through to his experiences on the recent Last Waltz tours with legendary blues performers. Later in the evening, Bob will bring up special guests Earl Cate, Terry Cagle and Liz Lottmann, for a true-blues jam. The evening is hosted by The Ozark Blues Society of Northwest Arkansas.
When: November 18, 2017 from 7PM-9PM.
Where: Sunrise Stage at Sunrise Guitars in Fayetteville
********
A Boston native born in 1949, Bob Margolin was inspired by Chuck Berry and started playing guitar at age 15 in local clubs. He was hired by Muddy Waters in 1973.
Muddy’s band toured the world and jammed with many great blues and rock musicians, “but the biggest thrill was playing Muddy’s Blues with him.” Muddy brought Margolin with him to special shows and recordings, when he sometimes didn’t use his whole band, to give him a familiar sound when working with other musicians. In 1975, they recorded Grammy Award-winning “Muddy Waters Woodstock Album”, Muddy’s last for Chess Records, which featured Paul Butterfield, and Levon Helm and Garth Hudson from The Band. In ‘76, Muddy brought Margolin with him to San Francisco to perform at The Band’s “Last Waltz” concert. Martin Scorsese filmed the concert for the classic film. “As it happened, only one camera was operating during our performance, zooming in or out, and since I was standing right next to Muddy, I was in every shot while he sang a powerful ‘Mannish Boy.'” Margolin also played on the four albums that Muddy recorded for Blue Sky Records, which were produced by Johnny Winter, and with Johnny on his Nothin’ But The Blues album. Three of those albums won Grammy Awards.
Margolin left Muddy’s band in 1980 and formed his own band. He released many albums from 1989 through 1993, and in 1996, his "Tribute to Muddy Waters" was nominated for a Grammy. Margolin appeared on the Kennedy Center Tribute to Muddy Waters in 1997, and the DVD of the event was released the next year. Bob has played on several Grammy-winning recordins, won numerous Blues Music Awards from the Blues Foundation, and is a Keeping The Blues Alive Award recipient for journalism. Bob was invited to play on the original "Last Waltz", and was a featured player on the recent "Last Waltz" tours.
"My Road" is Bob's latest recording, produced by Grammy-winning producer Michael Freeman. He'll be playing many of his originals from that recording, as well as many others he has played throughout his long career.

"If I'm going to hell, I'm going there playing the piano.
My grandmother, she say I shouldn't be playing. I should go to church. Fially, I say I'm going do this, I'm going do it. And she got where she didn't bother me about it. Read more at: https://www.brainyquote.com/quotes/quotes/m/muddywater196681.html
