Forensic Nurses Week
We’re blessed in the Southern Tier to have dedicated, specially trained Sexual Assault Forensic Examiners (SAFE providers) to help victims of sexual assault and violence. Monday marks the beginning of national Forensic Nurses Week, which is set aside to honor and recognize the contributions forensic nurses make to our communities. Across the Southern Tier, 13 forensic nurses provide services to victims at Jones Memorial Hospital, Olean General Hospital and UPMC Chautauqua WCA Hospital. Victims of sexual assault can access SAFE services at any one of the region’s hospitals, so they don’t have to seek help at their home-town hospital if they don’t want to. Forensic nurses also gather evidence to hold offenders accountable. If you know a SAFE provide, please take the time to thank them. I want to thank Olean General Hospital, WCA Hospital and Jones Memorial Hospital for creating dedicated SAFE Centers where victims of sexual assault can receive the specialized care they need and deserve. You can contact the SAFE Center at Olean General Hospital at (716) 373-2600, the SAFE Center at Jones Memorial Hospital at (585) 593-1100 and the SAFE Center at WCA Hospital at (716) 664-8120. STHCS Building
I’m excited to report that STHCS is starting to move into our new home at 150 North Union Street. We’ve begun taking over filing cabinets, binders and records to our new building which was the location of the former SEARS store in downtown Olean. We plan to have our entire office moved to the new building by the end of November. This is an exciting time for Southern Tier Health Care System. The Board of Directors challenged us to enhance our use of distance learning technology to provide training and health and wellness outreach. Our new facility is built around a state-of-the-art training center. The center will be a certified American Heart Association Training Center and in January we're hosting an Advanced-EMT class. The training center will benefit communities in Allegany, Cattaraugus and Chautauqua counties. Our new building also includes break out rooms for one-on-one training, office space for start-up nonprofits and meeting space for community-minded groups and partners that share our mission to improve the health and wellness of our rural communities. It’s wonderful to be starting this new chapter in our 23-year history. I want to thank the members of the Board of Directors for creating this vision of our future and for their ongoing support.
