The Love Light Orchestra :: THE LOVE LIGHT ORCHESTRA
Fans of Pokey LaFarge, the California Honeydrops, the Dustbowl Revival, and Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats will delight in the debut album by The Love Light Orchestra, a group of the best Memphis has to offer. The self-titled debut album was recorded live in concert to a full house at Bar DKDC in their hometown by Matt Ross-Spang, who produced Margo Price’s breakout album Midwest Farmer’s Daughter and whose other credits include Jason Isbell, Brent Cobb, The Drive-By Truckers, and Corb Lund. It was released November 17 on Blue Barrel Records.

Two-time Blues Music Award winner John Nemeth fronts The Love Light Orchestra. Esquire said, “There aren't many true soul men left in the world, but John Nemeth is one of 'em.” No Depression raved about his “magnificent voice.”

Meanwhile, band arranger, co-founder, and trumpet man Marc Franklin has previously lent his talents to recordings by Robert Cray, Melissa Etheridge, Jim Lauderdale, and Solomon Burke and toured with Bobby “Blue” Bland, a chief inspiration to the Orchestra. ...Find more about this CD and artist

Indigenous :: GRAY SKIES
“Be true to who you are and what you want to do.” In an exclusive Blues Rock Review interview, Mato Nanji offered this sound advice to artists looking to break into the music world. Though his words of wisdom are relevant to a wide range of art forms, they are particularly applicable to music that thrives on the hearts and souls of its creators and his kind of social consciousness THAT is so rare in today's blues and rock.

Mato, longtime front man of Native American band Indigenous makes the effort to improve his craft with each record. His playing and singing have never been better than on his 11th commercial outing, Gray Skies. On this fourth CD for Blues Bureau International, produced by Mike Varney, Mato once again forges ahead, pushing himself to new personal bests. Gray Skies contains the high-caliber guitar playing for which Mato has become known, along with his strong, soulful voice which are applied to a fresh assortment of high-level blues rock songs. ...Find more about this CD and artist

The Seattle of Jimi Hendrix summons the soul of the legendary musician
Dean R. Owen/ L.A. Times
(Seattle, WA) — This sprawling city overlooking Puget Sound has been home to some of the world’s most influential singers and songwriters, including Quincy Jones, Judy Collins and Kurt Cobain. But another musician, whom Rolling Stone magazine contends “exploded our idea of what rock music could be,” is known to elderly residents as Buster, his childhood nickname.

Jimi Hendrix would have been 75 years old on Nov. 27. His legacy as one of — if not the greatest — electric guitarist of all time is celebrated here in ways formal and fanciful, proper and peculiar, characterizations of the different life stages of this “West Coast Seattle Boy.”

The first of those stages began in 1942 when 17-year-old Lucille Jeter Hendrix delivered a baby boy at Harborview Hospital. Al, the child’s father, was stationed in the South Pacific during World War II and would not meet his son for nearly three years.

Seattle then had fewer than 400,000 residents. ...

Hitting a high note with blues
Gerry Tritz/News Tribune
(Jefferson City, MO) - The Mission is giving young and inexperienced musicians a chance to play the blues with seasoned pros — and live music fans in the area seem to like the results.

For the live music venue located at 915 E. High St. in Jefferson City, Missouri, starting a monthly blues jam was a gamble. A Sunday liquor license costs about as much as one for the rest of the week. But owner Jenny Babcock wanted to give it a try, in part to give experience to up-and-coming blues musicians. So she appealed to her regular customers, starting a small, offline crowdfunding campaign. Call it Kickstarter Unplugged.

For the patrons, it was a way to pay $50 and get into the venue for the rest of the year without a cover charge. For Babcock, it was a way to quickly raise money for the Sunday liquor license.
