How did you develop THERA-FLOW™ Yoga?
This has been a labor of love for 10 years! I have been very drawn to the moon/softer yoga practices as a way of slowing things down, deeply connecting to one’s true Self and healing. After studying and teaching Therapeutic Yoga for a long time, I found the practice start to evolve in unexpected ways over time. Reiki and other healing energy modalities, sankalpa, crystals, aromatherapy, sound therapy, meditation, breath work, chanting, body scan and shamanic practices that I use in my home healing practice began to find their way into the class. Another interesting shift that occurred over time has been the format of the class. Therapeutic Yoga is five or six restorative poses with 1 gentle yoga pose in between each one. Through observing to what and how the students seemed to respond, the content and flow of the class began to change based on the needs within the community. Quite naturally the practice started to morph into what it is today.- a safe haven for all to come and experience a profound connection to themselves.
What is the flow of a typical class?
In an effort to give students something they can count on in this crazy, unpredictable world, (my nod to dinacharya - daily self-care in Ayurveda), the class is designed in a consistent flowing rhythm to support students. We always start with a warm welcome greeting everyone in the room, optional chanting of Om 3 times, setting a class intention, sankalpa, breath work, meditation, 30 minutes of gentle yoga, a guided body scan and meditation, optional chanting of Om and a warm farewell. Sprinkled in with the practice is Reiki, smudging, sound therapy, crystals and aromatherapy. The room is always set up in a way to both inspire and calm the students. The breath work, meditation, and gentle flow can change a bit from week to week to keep things fresh and interesting. The gentle flow is designed with plenty of options for students, and works the body from head to toe by working with the elements and winds in the body, with particular attention to spinal motion in an effort to work with kundalini energy stemming from my Tantric Hatha Yoga background.
What do you get from teaching the class?
The growth that I have been privileged to witness in this community has been amazing! Seeing the camaraderie develop between students and watching people move through their lives with greater ease has been profound. It has been wonderful watching people develop home practices and healing strategies to support and empower themselves by working with the tools we use in class.
Who would benefit from a THERA-FLOW™ class?
Everyone! The class is designed to help people navigate stress, anxiety, sleep disorders, addiction, injury, pregnancy, and just to slow down, get quiet and experience general well being and a deep connection to one’s true Self.
I am deeply grateful to Nicole, Justin and Keala, for allowing me the opportunity to launch THERA-FLOW TM at IBY! Their support has been amazing! I could not think of a better hOMe for this special class where cultivating community and wellness are the cultural pillars on which the studio has been built.
