This Sunday, January 7
Epiphany/Three Kings Sunday
it’s always been the plan to celebrate Epiphany/Three Kings Day this Sunday, but now we also invite you to think of it as the “Fourteenth Day of Christmas!”

When we had to cancel the 10:00 pm Christmas Eve service due to snow, although the “unofficial” 10:00 pm service turned out to be lovely, choir members were disappointed that we didn’t get to sing some of the anthems we had spent so many hours rehearsing, and some church members were disappointed that you didn’t get to hear all of them. So we’re pulling out the stops this Sunday.

And why not? The celebration of Christmas may officially be over, but there are always angels among us, God is always being born anew in human flesh, every child brings a rebirth of hope, and there is always cause for rejoicing. So, on Sunday morning we’ll hear the magi story, and the choir will sing a couple of Christmas anthems you may already have heard and a couple you haven’t.

We’ll celebrate communion on another Sunday soon when we can give it the time it deserves.
Second Wednesday

You are welcome to join us, even if you had to miss the last session. We are all finding the book extremely helpful.

Visit to the Redmond Mosque
(Muslim Association of Puget Sound)
Sunday, January 21, 3:00 to 6:00 pm
The Muslim Association of Puget Sound is hosting a tour of the mosque, as well as dinner and discussion, for members and friends of Fauntleroy, Alki and Admiral UCC congregations. The tour is free and includes a short overview and Q&A session with Annelah Afzali, Executive Director of the American Muslim Empowerment Network, and a Middle Eastern supper.

It is worth the trip to interact with Aneelah. She is a dynamic speaker who welcomes all questions about her faith, especially those that are hard to ask!

Please make a reservation by January 18 so they know how many to plan for. Sign up at church this Sunday or next, or by directly emailing Mary Code (Fauntleroy Church).

We’ll also have a sign-up sheet at church for those who want to carpool or need a ride. The carpool will depart from Alki UCC at 2:15 pm. (It’s also fine if you want to go on your own and meet at the Mosque: 17550 NE 67th Ct, Redmond, WA 98052)
Call for Volunteers!
DESC "Adopt an Apartment Day" Saturday, February 17
Thanks to your generosity, the Outreach team has funds to "adopt" three apartments in the Estelle, a newly-built 91-unit affordable housing complex on Rainier Avenue in Southeast Seattle. The Estelle is a project of DESC, the Downtown Emergency Service Center, a Settle nonprofit providing emergency shelter and survival services for people living in a state of chronic homelessness.

Now we need shoppers to purchase household goods and furnishings in time for the first Estelle residents to move in on "Adopt an Apartment Day," set for Saturday, February 17. Volunteers are also needed that day to help set up basic furniture/furnishings and then celebrate as this wonderful new facility becomes HOME for 91 vulnerable, formerly homeless adults!

Contact Cinda Stenger with questions or to sign up.

The Estelle project epitomizes DESC's reputation as a national leader in implementing innovative, cost-effective strategies that end homelessness. The complex will house a first of its kind partnership with Harborview Medical Center to create an innovative housing program that brings together the advantages of both permanent supportive housing for chronically homeless people and high quality healthcare services on-site.

Approximately 15 units will be allocated for people exiting the hospital with healthcare needs who can’t be served in conventional residential care systems. This will also make on-site healthcare services available to all residents in the building.
In Our Circle of Prayer
In Our Prayers:
Mike Crowley, who’s been in the hospital for congestive heart failure;

Linda Pillo, who fell on the ice last week and broke her arm;

Sue Morris, former pastor of Fauntleroy and Plymouth Church, and friend to many of us, who had a heart attack on Monday

Friends and family on the east coast dealing with the vicious cold and snow this week;

The people in Puerto Rico, the US Virgin Islands, Texas and Florida still dealing with the aftermath of last year’s hurricanes.

From Pastor Diane
Thank you so much for all the thoughtful cards and gifts for my birthday, and to all who were able to drop in for the open house last Friday on such short notice! And special thanks to my Mary for planning the party and doing her best to get an invitation out to as many church members as possible. It was so special to have the house filled to the brim with people I cherish.

"Honoring Choices NW" Class on Advance Care Planning at Alki UCC
Sunday, January 28
after worship
Pastor Amy Hitchens and Emily Hitchens, RN, MN, EdD will lead an informative session on advanced directives, advance care planning and thinking ahead about what your wishes are if some unexpected health event or accident occurs.

Class attendance is limited to 12, so please RSVP with Emily Hitchens or the Church Office.

Both Amy and Emily are trained facilitators for Honoring Choices, which is sponsored by the Washington State Hospital Association and the Washington State Medical Association. The session offers you increased knowledge about healthcare decision making, an opportunity to review or update your advanced directive, and definitions on who is qualified to be your health care power of attorney in the event you cannot make decisions for yourself. There will also be a conversation about CPR and the POLST form.
The cost is $5.00 for the newly updated materials/forms.

There will be an opportunity later to witness each other’s forms once they are filled out, i.e. Washington State Law now states that all health care advanced directives and power of attorney forms need to be either notarized or witnessed by non-family members.

Based on the unfinished writings of James Baldwin, I Am Not Your Negro explores concepts of blackness in America through the lens of the assassinations of Malcolm X, Dr. King and Medgar Evers. The post-movie conversation will be led by Jane Elliott, the creator of the Blue Eyes/Brown Eyes Exercise. She began her anti-racism workshops and advocacy the day after Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. was killed, and has continued to be a leader and educator in anti-racism to this day.
