Child Health and Safety Team
We’re pleased to be hosting the Southern Tier Child Health and Safety Team meeting at our Training Center this afternoon. The Child Health and Safety Team is a NYS Office of Children and Family Services supported child fatality review team with a mission to prevent future child deaths and promote child health and safety. Recently, the team has been working with the Cattaraugus and Allegany County Departments of Public Works to create and place safe paddling signage at boat launches on the Allegheny and Genesee rivers. We’re working to have these signs in place before the next paddling season begins. This signage will be a clear reminder for parents and children of life jacket laws and common-sense ways to stay safe on the water. I want to thank the members of the Child Health and Safety Team for their ongoing commitment to the team and for working together to ensure the safety of all the children in Allegany and Cattaraugus counties.
Cribs for Kids Anniversary
It’s hard to believe it’s been two years since we started the Cribs for Kids program. This project started in February 2016 as a result of my participation in the Health Leadership Fellows Program through the Health Foundation for Western and Central New York. It’s been a busy two years. Since the program started, we’ve educated 257 parents and caregivers on safe sleep practices and distributed 192 Pack ‘n Play cribs to families in Allegany, Cattaraugus and Chautauqua counties. We also established Safe Sleep Ambassador MOUs with 16 organizations. These partnerships have been key to helping us spread the safe sleep message effectively. I want to thank our Safe Sleep Ambassador organizations for partnering with us to keep babies safe. Our follow-up surveys show that the education is working. Participants in the Cribs for Kids program are more likely to follow safe sleep recommendations when compared to nationwide averages. I want to thank the Health Foundation of Western and Central New York and Team Beethoven for allowing this collaborative project to grow.  I also want to thank the Allegany Area Community Foundation, the Cattaraugus Region Community Foundation, the Chautauqua Region Community Foundation, the Pizza Hut Raising Dough for Kids program, and all the individuals, organizations and businesses who have supported the program since it began. This program relies on the generosity of the community to sustain it.
