Alki UCC Weekly Messenger April 27, 2018
This Sunday, April 29, at 10:00 am
Cindy Ogasawara is preaching and co-leading worship with Marshan, Harry and Dan Kennedy (liturgist).

I will be in Yakima attending the Annual Meeting of the Pacific Northwest Conference UCC. All clergy are required to attend the meeting, so although I’d rather be here with you this Sunday, it’s a great opportunity to have church members lead worship.

Please support them by showing up and shining all sorts of love and grace and encouragement their way! — Pastor Diane

Hello wonderful Tiny House builders!

Last Saturday the team of volunteers finished 14 side walls for the seven houses! WOW!!!! A whole lot of lumber and smiles were filling up the build site. A HUGE THANK YOU to the volunteers that worked through the morning and early afternoon until the rain arrive.

Layer up, pull out the rain gear and wear your sunshine smiles once again! Please join us in the build this Saturday!

Upon arriving at Camp Second Chance, stop at the security office and sign in. You will be directed to our building site where you should sign in as well.

There will be a brief orientation meeting to review the build plan and assign work duties. We plan to build front and back walls, tilt walls onto one platform and possibly start the roof. Remember that this is an occupied living space and we will be working near the residents' homes.

A big SHOUT OUT to Gina Erickson who plans to provide the crew her mouth watering lasagna for lunch!

We welcome volunteers that would like to provide lunch, snacks
Thank you to the volunteers that are bringing tools and equipment. Check with Kathy about what we may need on site and make sure you label/mark your tools with your name or an identifier.

We will have compressors and a spider box on site for power.
Here's other information that will be helpful:

Dress for the weather
Wear sturdy boots or shoes (stepping on nails and other construction materials)
Bring:
Hammer
Safety glasses
Work gloves
Ear plugs (I will have extra)
Knee pads

FYI:
Porta potties on site
There is no running water

Thank you! YOU are helping to make this happen!

In appreciation,
Kathy
 Coming Soon!
Pledge happens every year. You know it’s coming. We’re gearing up, with another fabulous indulgence basket, a chance to plug into fun church activities, and a very attractive new pledge card.

It’s time to invest in what we love: our church and our mission. Watch for more info, starting this Sunday!

In Our Circle of Prayer
In Our Prayers:
Lisa Burke, who was taken to Swedish Hospital (Cherry Hill) at the end of worship last Sunday, after getting light-headed and fainting. Thanks so much to Vicky Smith who went with Lisa to the hospital on Sunday and stayed there for hours until Lisa's brother arrived.

As of Wednesday she was still in the hospital for observation. Given the brain surgery she had last November to remove a tumor, there’s obvious cause for concern. We’ll keep you posted as we learn more.

For those grieving the recent death of a loved one:
Lesa Henry, the family and friends of Mike Crowley, Jeff Jolly & family, Gary Gesellchen, Charley Rosenberry, Russ Thornock, Jason Huynh, Trish Dodds, Cynthia Jolly

Recent hospitalization, illness and other concerns:
Bev Connor, Lynn Gonzalez, Linda Pillo, Patty Magnuson’s brother, Shelley Webster, Jan Cochran

For home bound members/friends of Alki UCCRuth Okada, Doris Colbert

Wider World:  The victims and all those affected by the shooting at a Nashville area Waffle House; prayers for fewer guns and for all victims of gun violence; all those affected by the devastating California mudslides and wildfires; victims and survivors of extremist violence around the world; victims and survivors of the devastation in Mexico, Puerto Rico, Texas, Florida, the Caribbean, India and Bangladesh; the migrants seeking refuge around the world, and for those who are trying to help and serve them. The rest of the missing schoolgirls kidnapped by Boko Haram, who remain in our hearts as long as they remain missing. The hungry and homeless, the ill and the addicted, the lost and the lonely; the unemployed; US officials and troops.

Looking Ahead
Next Sunday, May 6, a delightful group of new members will be joining the church. That morning I also want to recognize and celebrate those who have been members of Alki UCC for 25+ years and 50+ years.

There’s a congregational meeting after worship, so we can’t do much hullabaloo at coffee hour, but it makes sense to honor our longest-time members the same day we welcome our newest members, especially in this transitional season in the congregation’s life.

We’ll also celebrate communion together for the last time before I depart on May 20. I hope you’ll be with us!
— Pastor Diane
Congregational Meeting on the
Budget/Bylaws
Next Sunday
Please attend a very important congregational meeting next Sunday after worship when we will offer a budget proposal for the 2018-2019 fiscal year, go over our bylaw proposal and leave open to the congregation any additional changes, additions or deletions that you may offer.

Our bylaws sub-committee will then go over this updated draft and send it to the Board for approval.
Time to Empty the Lost & Found
It's Spring Cleaning Season, and all items in the building's Lost & Found bin will be donated or tossed if not claimed by Monday, May 14.

There are a few coats/jackets as well as the usual assorted stuff ... so please give it a look and retrieve what's yours.

The bin is located by the bench in the office level lobby. Thank you.
