Alki UCC Weekly Messenger May 4, 2018
This Sunday, May 6at 10:00 am
My Lord, what a morning! We are receiving a dozen new members into the church, recognizing those who have been members for 25+ and 50+ years, and sharing in the sacrament of holy communion. So it’s a full morning, and I will try to keep my message short (though with only three Sunday’s remaining as your pastor I beg forgiveness in advance if and when we go overtime!).

After the service and a brief break for coffee, we’ll have a congregational meeting to hear from the Board of Directors about the proposed budget for FY 2018-19 and the proposed new bylaws.
— Pastor Diane
Budget & Bylaws this Sunday!
Our “budget & bylaws” congregational meeting is this Sunday, May 6. Please join us back in the sanctuary after a brief break for coffee and a treat.

Bylaws: This will be review and discussion. Please read through the updated bylaws and FAQ sheet that you received last week and bring your questions or concerns. We’ll work with your input and send out a second copy by the end of May, in time for a vote at the Annual Congregational Meeting on June 10.

Budget: It’s also time to review the preliminary budget for our 2018 to 2019 fiscal year, which starts July 1. Rod Peeler will present the information and provide printed copies on Sunday. A Q&A session will follow. We’ll vote on the budget at our annual meeting.

Thank you: to the dedicated team who worked so hard on the initial bylaws revision in 2017, Dave Smith, Gary Gesellchen, Pete Jansen, Dayle Banks, Bonita Corliss and Karen Rutherford Dupuis! Our current work was built on what they had done, which made a monumental task much easier.

Your BOD bylaws update team,

Pacific Northwest ConferenceUCC
Annual Meeting Report
Rod Peeler, Julia Peeler and I gathered as delegates for the Annual Meeting of the Pacific Northwest Conference last Friday through Sunday, April 27 to 29. We joined delegates from other congregations, leaders and friends of the PNC to reflect on “Breaking Forth,” a theme that celebrates the PNC ministry of building deeper relationships and growing vitality in PNC churches and communities.

The Keynote speaker was Bishop Dwayne Royster, who has served in pastoral ministry for 20 years and is the minister emeritus and founding pastor of Living Water United Church of Christ in Philadelphia. He is currently serving as political director for People Improving Communities through Organizing (PICO). PICO believes in building a more just world by teaching people of faith how to build and exercise their own power to address the root causes of the problems they face. At the center of PICO’s model of faith-based community organizing is a belief in the potential for transformation — of people, institutions and the larger culture.

We attended workshops which included “Moving from Church 2.0 to 3.0: Visioning to Action” and “New Life Through Church Buildings.”
We voted to ratify the UCC Constitutional Amendments passed at last year’s General Synod, which, among other things, alters the denomination’s governing structure, include gender-neutral inclusive language, reiterate support by local bodies over ordained clergy and recognize the UCC’s full communion relationship with the United Church of Canada.

It was an amazing weekend! I am willing to share more about what I learned in some of these workshops and presentations. If you wold like to know more, please let me know.

The PNC will also be supporting us through our transition as we celebrate the ministry of Pastor Diane and move on to the next chapter of Alki UCC!

Peace,
Shannon Peterson

About Last Week's Build
Once again the amazing crew of builders pulled out all the stops and completed the building of the front and back walls for all 7 houses!

An unstoppable and wonderful team of people got the job done and Doug and his crew tilted and finished the walls for the first house and started the roof process. A HUGE THANK YOU to the volunteers that worked last Saturday.

Each Saturday you have provided your priceless skills and heartwarming gift of volunteering to get these houses built! These 7 houses will be a home to residents who are currently living in tents at Camp Second Chance. Homes that will bring smiles to their faces as we happily hand them the keys and they walk through the door into a safer, warmer space, all because of YOU!

In appreciation,
Kathy
In Our Circle of Prayer
In Our Prayers:
Kristin Michael, whose mother died Wednesday morning at Horizon House after a long decline in health.

Lisa Burke, who is now in rehab at Mt. St Vincent. Her autonomic nervous system, which regulates things like blood pressure and heart rate, is not working properly, so they are treating her with medication and teaching her how to move, sit up and stand so that she won’t have a sudden drop in blood pressure.

Congratulations to Amy Hitchens, who has been recommended by the Pastoral Search Committee of Normandy Park United Church of Christ to be their new settled Pastor and Teacher! The congregation will officially vote on whether to call her next Sunday, but at this point it’s really just a formality, since she has been serving as their “bridge pastor” for the last nine months since their interim pastor left. Of course, their good news is a loss for us, but we rejoice in the ties that bind us and the years that Amy, Shannon and Naomi have been part of Alki UCC.

The rest of the missing schoolgirls kidnapped by Boko Haram, who remain in our hearts as long as they remain missing. The hungry and homeless, the ill and the addicted, the lost and the lonely; the unemployed.

Sign the Petition!
Initiative 1631 is sponsored by the Alliance for Jobs and Clean Energy, a coalition of individuals, businesses, and more than 200 organizations in Washington state committed to building our state’s economy, improving the health of our residents, and leading on the fight against climate change.

In March, the Alliance filed a ballot initiative for clean air, clean energy, and good jobs. Now, the I-1631 campaign must gather 260,000 signatures from registered Washington voters by June 30 to qualify for the 2018 November ballot.

Please consider signing a petition next time you're at church; they're on the publications table in the narthex.

More information here or call 206/535-6617 to volunteer to help collect signatures!
