SAFE (Sexual Assault Forensic Examiner) Meeting

STHCS staff attended a SAFE (Sexual Assault Forensic Examiner) meeting that was held Tuesday at UPMC Chautauqua WCA in Jamestown. One of the major topics we discussed was an addition to Public Health Law 2805, which now indicates all sexual offense evidence kits collected by hospitals must be kept in a locked, separate and secure area for 20 years from the date of collection (in the past, the law mandated these be kept 30 days). We have been working with our hospitals' coordinators to ensure long-term storage of the evidence until at least April 1, 2021, when the State says it will have a facility to maintain the kits.
Our SAFE initiative began at UPMC Chautauqua WCA in 2014 with the establishment of a SAFE Center. We're proud of its expansion to date to provide treatment and support to survivors of sexual assault across Chautauqua, Cattaraugus and Allegany counties. I'd like to thank our site coordinators at WCA, Olean General Hospital and Jones Memorial Hospital for working with us to ensure we meet this new requirement.
Matter of Balance

Last week, our Program Development Coordinator, Jeff Ciminesi, participated in training sessions offered by Ardent Solutions to become a Matter of Balance coach. Matter of Balance is an evidence-based falls prevention program that seeks to educate older adults about risk factors for falls and teaches individuals to limit that risk.
Last winter, we held a Matter of Balance course that was very well received in partnership with Ardent Solutions at our Training Center. We’re excited about the opportunity to partner with Ardent Solutions on this important project and look forward to providing Matter of Balance classes to residents of our communities in the coming months.
