Duncan McClellan's fascination with glass began at age five, when he visited a glass factory in West Virginia. Duncan never forgot the image of the glowing, molten mass being formed by an expert craftsman.

After successfully working with leather and clay, he finally had the opportunity to learn to blow glass at a studio in Ybor City, Florida in 1987. Duncan has studied the creation of larger forms with Fred Kahl and John Brekke, two instructors and artists working at the New York Experimental Glass Workshop. Duncan has also been honored as the second American invited to study and work at the ARS Studio in Murano, Italy.

Duncan's processes enables him to place imagery on the inside and outside (and in some cases both) of his glass vessels. In his one-of-a-kind or series works, images are juxtaposed to articulate the message or idea. The focus is centered around the internal graal technique and overlay techniques, incorporating hand cutting, photo resist and computer graphics.

To finish these works, acid etching, fire polishing and a six-stage grinding and polishing technique are used. Currently, his work depicts emotions relating to family, personal growth and the spiritual connections between each of us as souls.

Meet the Maestro with Marlene Rose

Our recent Maestro program with Marlene Rose was unique and very engaging. "Unique" as it was held at Art Santa Fe in the convention center at the booth where her glass art was being displayed by her representing gallery, Art Link International (who was kind enough to arrange for free entry into Art Santa Fe!). "Engaging" because of an excellent presentation by Marlene on her design esthetic, multiple styles and methods of her efforts. A big Thank You to all who attended, as well as Marlene, Art Link and Art Santa Fe!

As you have noted in prior Newsletters, we are planning a glass art weekend called "Safari to Santa Fe" to be held in Santa Fe on October 18-21, 2018. It will be a fun, educational and social, glass art-filled weekend. Attendees will connect with local artists and galleries, see glass making demonstrations, visit a collector's home, dine at fantastic restaurants, attend docent-tours of select local galleries, stroll the Canyon Road "Paint Out" and attend a private tour of ArtsThrive at the Albuquerque Museum where a few of our notable member artists have been invited to exhibit their works. We have not quite filled our limited quota of 26, so, even if you live in NM, please sign up on our website, it promises a great weekend.

Regards, David
