Working Toward the Health and Safety of Our Children

I’m happy to report we’ve applied for additional grant funding from the Dr. Lyle F. Renodin Foundation to support our Child Health and Safety Team efforts. We expect the Foundation’s Board to decide on the funding opportunity in September.

Our Cribs for Kids program has been a great success, having educated and supplied free, safe cribs to hundreds of low-income parents/caregivers in Cattaraugus, Allegany and Chautauqua counties since 2016. Our local hospitals are now either Safe Sleep Certified or working toward certification. We are grateful to the Departments of Social Services, pediatrician’s offices and other applicable public services that now distribute literature on safe sleep and other health and safety tips. We’re also actively seeking ways enhance our EMS training capacity for pediatric prehospital care.

Improved Access to Affordable Health Insurance

STHCS is supporting a five-year grant application for Healthy Community Alliance (HCA) for the NYS of Health: Navigator Program. STHCS currently subcontracts with HCA to provide NYS of Health Insurance Navigation Services. Between active roles with HCA and Universal Primary Care (UPC), our programs have helped over 17,000 people with health insurance since October 2016.
I want to thank HCA and UPC for being terrific partners in this endeavor, and a big thanks to our current navigator, Corrie Malone, who works tirelessly to assist referrals, callers and even walk-ins off the street. We would also like to welcome our newest certified navigator, Toni Cottone, to the team.
