Alki UCC Weekly Messenger August 10, 2018
This Sunday, August 12 at 10:00 am
Pastor Bruce begins a new sermon series on Creation with "Why Recycling Matters" as the lead theme. Kathy Heinemann and Stephanie Trinneer from Admiral UCC give an offering of Special Music in their interpretation of Cornerstone by Lari Goss.
Our Scripture is Genesis 1.

This Sunday and next, August 12 & 19, we welcome our friends from Admiral UCC, who will be joining us for worship.
Becoming an Immigrant-Welcoming Community
Next Meeting Sunday, August 19 at 2:00 pm
The plight of refugees at our southern border is dire.

Facing collapsing economies and violence in their home countries, desperate people hazard long, dangerous journeys, frequently with no more than they can carry to the Mexican/US border. When they finally arrive, they are confronted with a chaotic reception, made increasingly hostile by the current administration's inhumane immigration policies and practices.

Camps have sprung up along the border where individuals and families wait for weeks for even a first interview. Even if they're permitted to enter, they face a years-long legal limbo in which they cannot work and face incarceration in this country. The scale of the crisis is unimaginable.

After worship at Admiral on July 29, a group from all three West Seattle UCC congregations met to begin discussing how we can help. Three short-term steps were identified:

⇒ Pastor Leah from Fauntleroy will visit the AZ/Mexico border Aug 26-30. Local UCCs there have identified desperately-needed supplies (soap, towels, etc.) for stranded refugees.  Donations for this purpose are needed right now! See Border Immigrant Relief Donations Drive details below.

⇒ Fox Island UCC will come to West Seattle and share details of its prison ministry at SeaTac and Tacoma in support of detainees held in both prisons and how we can support them the last week of August; details to follow.

⇒ Each congregation is starting to explore the challenges of becoming an “Immigrant-Welcoming Community,” as outlined in National and PNW Conference UCC materials.

A second meeting of this group is scheduled for 2:00 pm on Sunday, August 19 in our Parlor.

If you have passion or simply curiosity in this mission, please join us!

Host Homes Needed for Homeless Youth through YMCA Program
YMCA's proven and successful Host Home Program matches homeless young people aged 18-24 with community hosts who provide a living space and a vital opportunity for these youth to experience stability and build living skills.

How you can make a difference:
Participants are clean/sober, have a case manager and life goals for jobs/education/permanent housing. Most have jobs or are in school during the day. Hosts, who are 21 or older, participate for 6 months. They provide an available room/private space, meals and encouragement. Hosts are also asked to have home/renter's insurance and to talk with their guest's Case Manager as needed.

Hosts also receive a $300 monthly stipend for expenses.
More information here, OR contact Scott: (206) 749-7545.

This is a simple/direct way to make an impact on our homeless crisis. Thank you, Cinda Stenger

Your very festive
Board of Directors
Advocacy Moment!
If you feel strongly about King County investing in low income housing, please send a quick email to Dow Constantine and Joe McDermott on the choice between upgrading Safeco field versus building low income housing.

Suggested email message:
Prioritize housing over home runs! Please invest the Hotel/Motel tax in low income housing, not Safeco field. Thank you.
