New papers, articles and/or OpEds by DKI APCSS faculty members:  
 
Friends, Firsts and the Future at RimPac 2018” is a new article by Lt. Cmdr. Leah Cole, U.S. Coast Guard Military Fellow at the Daniel K. Inouye Center for Security Studies. Published recently by the U.S. Naval Institute’s Proceedings Today, the article covers what’s new and significant in this year’s Rim of the Pacific exercise. From the use of social media to the Integration of land-based forces, RimPac 2018 continues to expand the capabilities of those involved.
 
After attending the Shangri-La Dialogue, Prof. Kerry Lynn Nankivell wrote a commentary that addresses her observations and reflections entitled "In Defense of the Rules-Based International Order Reflections from Shangri-La Dialogue." Click here for the full article.
 
Dr. Christopher C. Harmon has finished a fifth book on terrorism and counterterrorism.  In January 2018 The Brookings Institution Press released The Terrorist Argument: Modern Advocacy & Propaganda, co-authored with Randall Bowdish, PhD.  Click here for the full article.
 
 Dr. Saira Yamin and Lt. Col. Michael C. Burgoyne have written about one aspect of the Center's Women, Peace, and Security program entitled "Advancing Security through a Gender Lens: Building Capacity of International Security Practitioners.

RIMPAC WPS session
Dr. Saira Yamin spoke at the Human Capital Summit hosted by RIMPAC, the largest international maritime warfare exercise, held biennially in Honolulu, Hawaii. The event was held on June 29th and aimed to promote regional stability and multilateral cooperation. Dr. Yamin was part of the “Women, Peace and Security” panel along with Brig General Suzanne Vares-Lum (PACOM J5MA) and AIRCDRE Phillip Champion (Royal Australian Air Force). The panelists highlighted the vulnerability of women in disaster and conflict zones and the importance of integrating the gender perspective by advancing women’s roles in policy formulation and on the ground. The event was attended by RIMPAC participants from the U.S. Chile, Colombia, Indonesia, Philippines and Tonga.
 
Dr. Virginia B. Watson served as a panelist on “Incorporating Technology in Maritime Strategy” in the Maritime Security Symposium 2018 held in Manila, Philippines on May AC10, 2018
 
On Monday April 16, Dr. Justin Nankivell, Dr. Deon Canyon and Associate Professor Benjamin Ryan visited the ASEAN Coordination Centre for Humanitarian Assistance (AHA Centre) in Jakarta, Indonesia. The visit included a tour of the facility and discussions about future collaboration opportunities with Ms. Adelina Kamal (CCM16-), Executive Director, Mr. Arnel Capili, Director of Operations, Ms. Nita Ryarti, Programme Coordinator, Mr. Mizan Bisri, Disaster and Monitoring Analysis Officer and Ms. Ferosa, Programme Assistant. The AHA Centre facilitates cooperation and coordination among ASEAN Member States and with the United Nations and international organizations, including the security sector, for disaster management and emergency response across the region.
 
On that same trip Dr. Justin Nankivell, Mr. Jacky Ly U.S. Mission to ASEAN and Associate Professor Benjamin Ryan met with Ms. Mala Selvaraju, Assistant Director, and Ms. Airin Rachmas, Technical Officer, from the ASEAN Secretariat in Jakarta, Indonesia. An overview of APCSS activities in the region was provided including the maritime shared awareness workshop and engagement with the AHA Centre.

Comprehensive Security Responses to Terrorism course
The Comprehensive Security Responses to Terrorism course (CSRT 18-1) kicked off on July 12th with 108 Fellows from 49 locations around the world.  More on this course in the next DKI APCSS Monthly Activities Report. 
 

 
Intense discussions and problem-solving during seminar talks are a crucial part of isolating the complexity of terrorism.
Deadline for Faculty Positions is August 31st
DKI APCSS has several faculty positions open for interested applicants.  The Center is looking for experts in Maritime Security, Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) And Security Sector Reform/Development (SSR/SSD), Northeast Asia, and Counter Terrorism/Countering Violent Extremism.  Deadline is August 31, 2018.  For more information click here.
