Alki UCC Weekly Messenger August 17, 2018
This Sunday, August 12 at 10:00 am
Pastor Bruce preaches the second part of his "Love of Creation" series; Sunday's sermon is on Racism. Our scripture is Genesis 2.

We again welcome our friends from Admiral UCC, who will be joining us for worship.

Please join us to continue our discussion on "Becoming an Immigrant-Welcoming Community" at 2:00 pm in the Parlor. See article below.
Becoming an Immigrant-Welcoming Community
Next Meeting Sunday, August 19 at 2:00 pm
The plight of refugees at our southern border is dire.

Facing collapsing economies and violence in their home countries, desperate people hazard long, dangerous journeys, frequently with no more than they can carry to the Mexican/US border. When they finally arrive, they are confronted with a chaotic reception, made increasingly hostile by the current administration's inhumane immigration policies and practices.

Camps have sprung up along the border where individuals and families wait for weeks for even a first interview. Even if they're permitted to enter, they face a years-long legal limbo in which they cannot work and face incarceration in this country. The scale of the crisis is unimaginable.

After worship at Admiral on July 29, a group from all three West Seattle UCC congregations met to begin discussing how we can help. Each congregation is starting to explore the challenges of becoming an “Immigrant-Welcoming Community,” as outlined in National and PNW Conference UCC materials.

A second meeting of this group is scheduled for 2:00 pm this Sunday, August 19 in our Parlor.

If you have passion or simply curiosity in this mission, please join us!

Call for Liturgists
We're creating the fall Liturgist Schedule for Sunday worship and invite anyone interested to sign up and join the existing team!

Liturgists arrive by 9:30 am on their assigned Sunday to do a mic check. During worship, they read the Call to Worship (as assigned), the scripture passages and make a brief personal statement before the offertory.

You’ll receive the scripture text and Order of Worship in advance AND we’ll have a special Liturgist Binder for you on Sunday.

Give it a try! No experience needed. You'll be joining an existing group; liturgists typically serve one Sunday every third month, or so.

Contact the Church Office if you have any questions or to sign up.
