Safari to Santa Fe
October 18-21, 2018

GANM is hosting an exciting first-ever Safari weekend focused on a comprehensive series of glass art events. Artists, galleries, studios, demonstrations, classes, and home tours are layered into a full agenda for glass lovers. Go to glassnm.org to see the complete schedule and to sign up.

GANM Glass Safari to Santa Fe
Some of our highlights include the following:

THURSDAY night, GANM hosts our guests with a 'welcoming' party at Hotel Santa Fe with our Board members and local artists present, including Harry Pollitt.

FRIDAY, we start out at Liquid Light Glass for an exciting glass-blowing demonstration by Elodie Holmes and her amazing team of artists on staff. After lunch we bus over to the Railyard and meet artist Lucy Lyon at LewAllen Galleries and view their exhibition of national and international glass works. Then we proceed to Blue Rain with their legion of impressive works of glass. As we continue walking the area, we have many options to tour other art galleries at the Railyard until we head to Bullseye Glass Resource Center at 2:45. New Mexican artist, Emily Brock greets us along with the expert Bullseye team to guide us at our 'Make & Take' class.

SATURDAY, the Glass Safari kicks off at Winterowd Fine Art on Canyon Road. Karen Bexfield will discuss her art pieces, with Karla Winterowd hosting breakfast for us. Next we head to Globe Fine Art and view the works of Patrick Morrissey's pieces among others, and visit the gallery's outdoor glass garden. After lunch at The Compound we move next door to Bellas Artes Gallery and meet glass art icon, Mary Shaffer, another local New Mexican and early glass art pioneer. For dessert we walk one block to Tansey Contemporary where Australian glass artist, Clare Belfrage will show and discuss her stunning work. In the early evening we drive to the home of Roddie and Steve Harris to tour their collection of glass in a space designed to showcase glass art while highlighting the Santa Fe landscapes.

Note: Saturday is the annual "Paint Out" on Canyon Road, so there will be lots going on!

SUNDAY, we drive to the Albuquerque Museum for their 28th Annual ArtsThrive. More than 100 artists are exhibiting their works including glass artists Sarah Nelson (NM), Anna Boothe (PA), Karen Bexfield (NM), Tali Grinshpan (CA), Toby McGee (OK), Linda Mae Tratechaud (NM), Corinne McAuley (AZ), Patty Carmody Smith (MN).

Fused glass triptych on copper with patina

A new way to think about stained glass - that's what you get when Dan Neil Barnes goes beyond traditional ideas about lamps and windows by adding treated metals, crafted wood and unique lighting to stained glass. His work moves the craft of stained glass into a new creative art form, one that pushes the idea of glass in art to a whole new level.

Born to a family of builders and craftsmen, Dan Neil Barnes experienced firsthand the satisfaction of creating something from an idea or inspiration. The love of creating his own designs was what led Dan to open his own business in 1986. Since then, Dan has earned an outstanding reputation in the glass community for his design flair and top quality craftsmanship.

Seeking another creative outlet, Dan began experimenting with stained glass several years ago. After studying the craft from Laura Hallock in Lexington, KY, Dan began creating his own original designs combining light, color and texture. Dan was awarded top honors for his stained glass in local art shows.

Note from David

Duncan McClellan gave a lively, multi-faceted presentation at Winterowd Fine Art to a packed house on August 4th. Duncan is a tour de force, dedicated to making the St. Petersburg/Sarasota Florida region a glass mecca in the Southeast. And as an artist, gallerist, entrepreneur, businessman, philanthropist, strategist, urban developer, mentor and financial supporter of young glass artists, his unbounded energy assures that his vision will become a reality. As always, our thanks to Karla Winterowd for hosting the GANM and to Duncan and his wife, Irene, for travelling to Santa Fe to meet with our Alliance members and guests.

Finally, and most importantly, September begins the season to nominate and elect future GANM Board members. We have a vibrant, forward-looking organization offering educational, social and just plain fun activities for our members. And thanks to our new website and to those who worked tirelessly to develop it, our artist-members will enjoy even greater benefits than in the past. With so much activity benefitting GANM members and with the Board shouldering most of the responsibilities, we need additional help. Knowing that you enjoy our events, please volunteer and/or add your name for consideration to join the Board.

We need you!!

Warm regards, David
