A Matter of Balance Trainings Scheduled
Southern Tier Health Care System, Inc. (STHCS) will host a series of upcoming A Matter of Balance trainings beginning Monday, Sept. 24. The program is geared toward older adults at risk of falling to help manage hazards and improve mobility. It teaches participants how to reduce their risk of falling by increasing strength and balance and making easy changes for a safer home environment.
Pre-registration is required by Monday, Sept. 17 by calling Ardent Solutions at (585) 593-1738. The courses will be held in our new Training Center, 150 North Union Street in Olean, on Mondays and Wednesdays from 1 to 3 p.m. and will end Monday, Oct. 22. I’d like to thank our partners -- Ardent Solutions, Healthy Community Alliance (HCA) and the United Way of Cattaraugus County -- for helping to make these important trainings possible.
Assessing Community Health Needs for Strategic Plans
It was great to see so many community leaders and health-care stakeholders come together again to work on solving common issues. The first meeting of the Steering Committee for the 2019 Community Health Needs Assessment-Community Health Improvement Plan (CHNA-CHIP) was held Thursday, Sept. 13.

Over the next several months, I'll be participating in this series of meetings coordinated between Olean General Hospital and the Cattaraugus County Health Department. Civic and health-care leaders will work collaboratively to ensure our communities' care needs are effectively addressed. It involves analysis of the issues our area residents and care systems face, and leads to the development of strategic plans for services and programs to overcome them. These plans must align with priority areas of the New York State Prevention Agenda. The outcomes will be announced next year. It's an honor to be involved in this process.
