Alki UCC Weekly Messenger November 2
A letter to the UCC Family of Faith:
We can’t let evil prevail

October 29, 2018

The news over the past weeks has revealed an undercurrent of hate within our culture and our country. Between the assumption that immigrants walking nearly 2,000 miles seeking asylum are seen as a threat to our security; the pipe bombs mailed to those who oppose our current political administration; the massacre of 11 Jewish citizens during services at Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh; and the shooting of an African American man and woman in a grocery store after a failed attempt to enter a church of Black worshipers, it is hard to find cause for hope in our nation.

The rhetoric of hate and divisiveness calls for a response from the faith community ... we must advocate for justice, humanitarian treatment of our neighbors, and for safety in our places of worship..

... Read the entire letter here.

The Rev. Bonnie Bates
Conference Minister
Penn. Northeast Conference United Church of Christ

This Sunday, November 4 at 10:00 am
Want a story about commitment? Want a story about hope? Look no further than the book of Ruth.

Ruth and Naomi and Orpah found themselves in a time when women had no value to society unless they were married. Naomi, Ruth and Orpah's husbands had died, and it appeared that there was no hope unless they split up and went their separate ways.

The only exception...Naomi. Although she faced a fate that was full of despair, she encouraged her daughters-in-law to leave her. Orpah followed her mother-in-law's directions; but Naomi and Ruth stayed together and came up with a plan to carry on.

Come this Sunday to find out more.
— The Rev. Bruce A Wilson Jr.

Attention Immigrant Advocates
Call for Urgent Action
YOUR voice is urgently needed on the Trump administration's proposed change to the federal rule on Public Charge, a policy that will harshly impact millions of immigrant families.

The proposed rule change has been posted to the Federal Register and is now open for public comment.

As part of the Protecting Immigrant Families coalition in WA, we have a unique faith community portal to use. There, you can add your voice to the thousands of advocates across America who have already said NO to this cruel and unnecessary proposal.

Please write a comment today at: http://bit.ly/FANopposesPublicChargeRule.

A suggested message is below, but in order to be counted it is important to add a line or two from your unique perspective, a story, why you care about this issue.

As a person of faith I am deeply concerned about the impact of the proposed administrative rule change on our immigrant community members and their families. Our immigrant community plays a very important role in supporting the vitality of our local, state, and nation’s economy.

[ADD PERSONAL EXAMPLES HERE]

This rule change will impact the ability of our neighbors to access basic services like food, housing, and health care. My faith tradition’s values speak of welcome to the stranger, unity of the family, and care for the well-being of all who reside in our state and nation. For these reasons, the Department should immediately withdraw its current proposal and dedicate its efforts to advancing policies that strengthen, rather than undermine, the ability of immigrants to support themselves and their families in the future.
