Alki UCC Weekly Messenger November 9
This Sunday, November 11 at 10:00 am
This Sunday we welcome Guest Preacher Rev. Dr. Cameron M. Sharp, who will be giving a sermon titled The Most Important Commandment — Love God.

Pastor Cameron notes:

God sets our path and we are called upon to keep steady to the course. It is not a hard path. Rather a path that calls for and leads to love. When we walk in God’s path of love we have no regrets. However, God’s path may surprise us. Even God upgraded the path to forgiveness and new life. The change was from the blood of goats and doves to the sacrifice of the Son. The Old and New Testaments are clear. There are commandments! And the Greatest Commandment is LOVE.

Rev. Dr. Cameron M. Sharp
Having grown into a Progressive Theology from a Bible grounded childhood, the Rev. Dr. Cameron M Sharp comes to you as a compassionate Pastor-Teacher. His ministerial gifts have been used by God in South Korea, Fiji, Japan, Far North Canada, Mexico and across the USA.

He has worn the titles Missionary, Evangelist, Teacher, Pastor and Chaplain. His Master of Divinity was earned at St Paul’s Theological Seminary. His Doctorate in Pastoral Care and Counseling was earned at Sanctus Theological Institute.

Despite all this, however, most import to him – and I hope to you – is that he is daily a Servant of God. Cameron embraces inclusivity and acceptance of diversity. He believes these are the hallmarks of the Character of God whom we all emulate. Cameron joins us today with a warm open heart as we worship God together.

Update on Interim
"The gifts Christ gave were that some would be apostles,
some prophets, some evangelists, some pastors and
teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry,
for building up the body of Christ." — Ephesians 4:11-12

Unfortunately, we were unable to come to a mutual agreement with a prospective interim pastoral candidate so we have reopened the search. As we continue our search for an interim pastor, we need to stay focused on what is important to this congregation.

We are a congregation of loving people who all have incredible gifts to offer. As we live through this transition, we ask that all stay focused on our love for one another and the community around us. Trust that God will bring someone who will lead us through our strengths, guide us through the fear and celebrate our accomplishments.

We thank you all for continued prayers as we move through this journey. We will do our very best to keep you posted on this process.

 "Sacred Conversations" Continue
Church Discussion on Race
Wednesday, November 14 at 7:00 pm
Alki UCC Parlor

Cinda Stenger is facilitating the discussion. Please continue to read in Everyday White People Confront Racial & Social Injustice.

Edited by Eddie Moore Jr., Everyday White People presents the personal stories and reflections of fifteen prominent white anti-racists. They vividly recount what led them to undertake this work, and frankly admit their continuing lapses and mistakes. They make it clear that confronting oppression (including their own prejudices) – whether about race, sexual orientation, ability or other differences – is a lifelong process of learning.

"Sacred Conversations" is on the second Wednesday of the month: December 12 and January 16. We will continue to draft a curriculum for those in our church community interested in furthering their personal journey to debunk racial myths and implicit bias.

Thanks, Bonita
Advent Approacheth!
We are honored to be your Advent Worship Committee and plans are moving forward for Advent. The committee has been charged with preparing for meaningful, inspirational and special worship services for the Sundays of Advent (December 2, 9, 16 & 23).

One of us may ask you to help by participating either in the weeks before or during the services . . . we'd like as many congregation members to be involved as possible.

Here are some opportunities we’d love you to help with:
•  Sunday, November 18 after worship:
Help building and hanging swags to decorate the church (no heavy lifting).
•  Participate on a team creating an Advent tree.

So, if you are asked, please say yes. Better still, volunteer!

Attention Immigrant Advocates
Call for Urgent Action
YOUR voice is urgently needed on the Trump administration's proposed change to the federal rule on Public Charge, a policy that will harshly impact millions of immigrant families.

The proposed rule change has been posted to the Federal Register and is now open for public comment.

As part of the Protecting Immigrant Families coalition in WA, we have a unique faith community portal to use. There, you can add your voice to the thousands of advocates across America who have already said NO to this cruel and unnecessary proposal.

Please write a comment today at: http://bit.ly/FANopposesPublicChargeRule.

A suggested message is below, but in order to be counted it is important to add a line or two from your unique perspective, a story, why you care about this issue.

As a person of faith I am deeply concerned about the impact of the proposed administrative rule change on our immigrant community members and their families. Our immigrant community plays a very important role in supporting the vitality of our local, state, and nation’s economy.

[ADD PERSONAL EXAMPLES HERE]

This rule change will impact the ability of our neighbors to access basic services like food, housing, and health care. My faith tradition’s values speak of welcome to the stranger, unity of the family, and care for the well-being of all who reside in our state and nation. For these reasons, the Department should immediately withdraw its current proposal and dedicate its efforts to advancing policies that strengthen, rather than undermine, the ability of immigrants to support themselves and their families in the future.
"Harvest of Empire" Film Screening
Sunday, November 18 at 5:00 pm/Admiral Church
At a time of heated and divisive debate over immigration, Harvest of Empire is an acclaimed feature-length documentary that reveals the direct connection between the long history of U.S. intervention in Latin America and the immigration crisis we face today.
