EMS Emergency Birthing Class
EMS providers never know when they’ll be called upon to bring a life into this world. In that light, I’m pleased to report our recent Life in the Fast Lane: Delivering the Unexpected emergency obstetrics class was well attended. On Monday, Jan. 14, we had 27 providers from Allegany, Cattaraugus and Chautauqua counties participate in the session at our Training Center in Olean. The training, in partnership with Catholic Health, included a hands-on birth simulation using a realistic OB manikin to deliver a baby in an emergency when safe and timely transport is impossible. Providers also learned how to treat labor complications to give both the baby and mother the best chance for a healthy recovery.

I’d like to thank Dr. Susan Littler for leading the training, as well as Catholic Health for working with us to provide this important opportunity for EMS personnel across our area.
EMT Age Restriction Lowered
A lowering of the age requirement to become an EMT was announced at the New York State EMS Council meeting last week in Troy. Ryan Greenberg, Director of the Bureau of EMS and Trauma Systems (BEMSTS), told us that Public Health Law §3002 has reduced the minimum age from 18 to 17 to become a certified EMT. This was great news, especially here in our rural area where EMS recruitment can be very difficult. We will now be able to reach young adults earlier to foster an interest in emergency medicine and community service. As a result, more will begin the training and certification process before leaving high school.

Many of these students can use EMS experience as a stepping stone to rewarding medical careers. Some of them, after achieving advanced degrees, choose to stay on as volunteer providers in their communities. If you or anyone you know is interested in becoming an EMT, contact STEMS Coordinator Alicia Broadbent at stems@sthcs.org or click here to learn more and fill out a brief form.
