Downtown Revitalization Initiative
I’m happy to report STHCS has applied for the funding of facade improvements under the state’s Downtown Revitalization Initiative (DRI) in the City of Olean. If selected, we hope to install new front and rear signage at our new 150 North Union Street location, as well as a new front entrance, tinted windows and ornamental topiaries to enhance the property’s aesthetics. (To the right is a preliminary artist’s rendering.) I feel these proposed upgrades align with several DRI goals, particularly allowing easier access to health agencies and also beautifying our revitalized downtown district.
We moved into this new office space and training center in December 2017, shortly after the city announced roughly $10 million available for such projects. If awarded, the tentative completion date is Sept. 30, 2019.
Prescription Drug-Disposal Units
We were recently able to secure several hundred Deterra prescription-drug disposal units for distribution to agencies covering our three counties. Thanks to the AmerisourceBergen Foundation, these disposal pouches will allow staff at HomeCare & Hospice of Allegany and Cattaraugus counties and Chautauqua Hospice & Palliative Care to safely discard potentially dangerous prescription medications at end of life. All too often, dangerously addictive medications end up in the wrong hands after the passing of a loved one. Partnering with these agencies helps us combat the opioid epidemic by ensuring that prescriptions end up dissolved immediately rather than sitting potentially unchecked in a medicine cabinet.

On that note, April 27 is National Prescription Drug Take Back Day, which allows community members and organizations to safely discard unwanted and expired prescription meds. I’ll keep you posted on local drop-off points when they’re announced April 1.
