Alzheimer’s Communication Lunch-and-Learn

It’s sad to see a family member or loved one slowly lose their memories and functionality to Alzheimer’s disease. As they no longer remember people they’ve known for years, they also experience difficulty communicating their needs and wants. We will be hosting a free lunch-and-learn session that will review Effective Communication Strategies to help caregivers of individuals with various dementias to overcome those barriers.

The one-hour session, in partnership with the Alzheimer’s Association of Western New York, will be at noon Tuesday, March 19 at STHCS’ Training Center, 150 North Union Street, Olean. Lunch will be included. To RSVP call STHCS at (716) 372-0614, visit www.sthcs.org or email stems@sthcs.org.

Addressing Campus Sexual Assault and Violence

I am now serving on the Steering Committee for the new Coordinated Community Response Team (CCRT) at St. Bonaventure University. This team – which includes officials from the Cattaraugus County Sheriff’s Office, Cattaraugus Community Action and other community agencies – will be working over the next three years to develop a strategic plan for improving response to campus sexual assaults.

We also aim to address another critical component: prevention of sexual assault and domestic violence. This project will involve significantly influencing societal and behavioral issues that often foster an environment for these crimes to occur. I’ll keep you posted as the team develops the strategic plan.
