Saturday May 4 - WRBS House Concert
The White Rock Blues Society is proud to present Michael Jerome Browne performing the third in a series of intimate house concerts featuring Canadian, American and International Blues artists. This event is only being promoted in our Weekly Bluesletter and website giving our membership first crack at the limited number of tickets.
( As a reminder to Bluesletter subscribers, being one, you are a member of the WRBS. We stopped issuing paid memberships a number of years ago to keep things simple. We are sure that Muddy Waters would have preferred it that way and like the idea of a house concert. After all he started out doing house concerts, which were called juke joints back then.)
This is a special kind of an event that allows fans to meet the performers and hear their music in a comfortable setting. Two sets are performed so there's ample opportunity of audience members to meet and great other music lovers as well as the artist. We use name tags to grease the wheels of conversation.
Michael Jerome Browne is a three-time Canadian Folk Music Award winner (Traditional Singer, 2015; Solo Artist, 2012 & 2008), Maple Blues Award winner (with 32 nominations since 1999), Kerrville (Texas) New Folk Finalist, four-time Juno Award Nominee in both the Roots/Traditional and Blues categories. He is a multi-instrumentalist, a songwriter, and a living encyclopedia of American Roots music.
That’s Where It’s At! is Michael Jerome Browne’s latest collection, focusing on soul music through the lens of a traditional blues player. Recorded largely live off the floor in Sherbrooke and Montréal (Québec) and Hamilton (Ontario), Michael’s finger style guitar and warm, unaffected vocals are front and centre, accompanied only by John McColgan’s funky drumming on five songs.
That’s Where It’s At! is the new album on Borealis Records, available February 8, 2019. This album focuses on the connection between blues and soul, the stripped-down accompaniment consisting only of Michael’s guitar, with drummer John McColgan on five tracks. Vocal guests include Harrison Kennedy, Roxanne Potvin and Eric Bibb. Five originals are mixed in with songs from Sam Cooke, Bobby “Blue” Bland, Al Green, Randy Newman and Stevie Wonder, as well as two spirituals from way back- the roots of gospel and soul.
To celebrate and share this outstanding new recording, Michael Jerome Browne will be on tour throughout Canada in the coming months, starting with industry showcases at both Blues Summit Nine in Toronto and Folk Alliance International in Montreal.

|Hornby Island Blues Workshop|
Twenty Years of Blues - 1999-2019
While twenty years is just a drop in the bucket of Blues time, we here on Hornby Island take great pride in saying we have been helping to keep the Blues vibrant and alive on the west coast in that time. These last two decades have been a blast as we have watched and heard students from all over Canada and the US come to our Blues Workshops to learn from all the best Blues and Roots instructors we could talk into coming to teach. We really appreciate the faith that has been shown as every musician who has come here to teach has agreed to do so without a contract, holding faith in our mantra that the entire operations runs on the egalitarian principle that everyone gets one share of whatever revenues we generate. That’s pretty cool if you think about it, that in a world driven mad by cash, that music can still generate such good faith and good vibrations. And here we are once again, this time with a big program of fourteen musicians joining with us and our faithful student disciples in the celebration of our twentieth Blues Week that will rolling out May 4 through May 11. We are planning a big party, some special musical treats and several acts of prestidigitation, conjuring and voodoo that will stun those who attend. Are you coming to the big show? You really should consider it.
Check out this promotion video regarding the workshop.
Harpdog Brown & The Uptown Blues Band
Blue Frog Studio - Friday May 10th
Harpdog Brown & The Uptown Blues Band
May 10, 2019
DOORS 6:00 PM • SHOW 7:00 PM
Canada’s Classic Bluesman, Harpdog Brown has a brand new album out. It’s called For Love & Money and it’s unlike anything you’ve heard from Dog! Produced by JUNO Award winner Steve Dawson, it’s a little bit Chicago and a whole lotta New Orleans and it is guaranteed to move ya! And the Official Lower Mainland Album Release Party right here at the Blue Frog!
Harpdog has assembled a wicked seven-piece band just for this special evening and you’re in for a treat! They will be performing the whole album for you along with a little storytelling in between - as you would expect from Dog. You won’t want to miss this!
Harpdog Brown - vocals, harmonicas
Dave Webb - keys
Rick Jacobson - drums
Pat Darcus - bass
Skye Lambourne - trombone
Jerry Cook - baritone & tenor sax
Riley Bartlett - trumpet
Harpdog Brown has grown a reputation as a real-deal purveyor of classic electric blues. Think of the old Chess Records and Sun Records of the late ’40s and early ‘50s. These days he’s been touring more and more as Harpdog Brown & the Uptown Blues Band - a vintage New Orleans Blues sound featuring slide trombone, keyboards, bass and drums and often a sax and clarinet. Still a vintage vibe, just a different vintage! This music will move you! They perform mostly originals yet they often include great songs of the masters from that era. Think Louis Jordan, Satchmo, Sonny Boy Williamson, Wynonie Harris, even Duke Ellington. Audiences are raving about this new show!
He’s been called a Blues Evangelist, and that’s a very fitting moniker. "I speak the blues like it's the truth, and it is”, he was recently quoted. "I do feel like I'm a servant of the people. A missionary if you will. Music can heal people if they pay attention to the messages in these songs.” He delivers those messages using the vintage sound whether it be with his lowdown classic blues band the Travelin’ Blues Show or with his Uptown Blues Band. Harpdog says "Blues has a healing power. It's a beautiful celebration of our perfectly flawed lives. We help people forget about their issues of the moment and then they realize that we all have our issues, and that's OK."
Harpdog has won three consecutive Maple Blues Awards for Harmonica Player of the Year (2014/2015/2016), the Fraser Valley Music Award, has three consecutive Western Canadian Music Awards Nominations, a Juno Nomination and is the only Canadian to win the coveted Muddy Award. In 2016, he was nominated for 3 Maple Blues Awards (Harmonica Player, Male Vocalist and Album of the Year) for his latest release Travelin’ With The Blues. Travelin' With The Blues released in 2016 is still sitting in the top roots and blues charts and follows his Top 20 charting 2014 release What It Is (Roots Music Report International Blues Albums).
Get off the couch and some see some seriously vintage blues that’s lots of fun!

In addition to the concerts, the Guitar Center Festival Village will be featured on Victory Plaza adjacent to the arena.
