As we near our 12th anniversary of lending in NC, I love reflecting on some of the more memorable lending experiences I’ve had over the last 35 years. Here are a few I think you may find interesting:
Giving a mortgage to Rita and Sam, recent Russian immigrants who bought a modest home so that they could put their son in private school. They told me they were so thrilled that they could go to bed at night and not worry about being arrested by the KGB.
Assuring a borrower who was so stressed out because he was $5 short in funds to close that yes!, we would make this work and he would get his home (he did).
Being at a closing with not only the borrowers, but also brothers, sisters, moms and dads and aunts and uncles who were going to “help” manage the property.
Getting a loan approved for self-employed borrowers who had only 6 months of business experience in their new state, with 5% down. This was back in the days before automated underwriting and underwriters made pure judgment calls. They became our best friends!
Closing our very first loan in 1985 when the jumbo limit was $115,300. He was foot doctor, whose oldest son graduated from high school with our daughter, 18 years later.
Closing a loan a few years ago for borrowers whose own bank didn’t want to risk not being able to approve them. They owned about 10 companies and their loan file was about 5 inches thick.
Speaking to a prospect on the phone about refinancing and pretending not to recognize his name. He played for the Carolina Panthers, and was impressively involved with his finances!
Closing a loan for the son of a General Motors CEO and REALLY NOT knowing who he was until afterwards when his Realtor told me.
Refinancing a mortgage for a woman who was divorcing her two-timing husband and was an emotional train wreck. By the time we got to closing, she wore a beautiful smile on her face again.

More than a handful of borrowers, who by refinancing, paid off thousands of dollars of debt and improved their cash flow tremendously. I could almost feel the weight being lifted off their shoulders.
Hundreds of first-time home buyers! I love their excitement, calming their anxieties and giving them the good news; We’re ready to close!!
How when we started PlumDog Financial in NC in 2007; our economy had tanked and people were frightened to make any financial moves. One closed borrower referred me to several more and on and on. The web of referrals was amazing and for that, I’ll always be grateful to ALL of my clients and for voting PlumDog Financial the Best Mortgage Company in WNC!
Have a wonderful summer and I’ll be here in case you want to refi to take money out for that dream vacation (tee-hee).
