Safe Kids Grant Opportunities
Safe Kids Worldwide, with support from program sponsor FedEx, offered an opportunity for Safe Kids coalitions to apply for grants for the 2019-2020 Walk This Way program year. The grants awarded will allow coalitions to conduct pedestrian
safety education and events to enhance awareness of child pedestrian safety and promote behavior change. As STHCS has recently started the Safe Kids Southern Tier New York Coalition, this is the first funding opportunity we have applied to through Safe Kids Worldwide. If funded, STHCS will host an "International Walk to School Day" at Washington West Elementary School on Oct. 2, 2019 as well as work with Jessica Dayton, Executive Director for Chautauqua Children’s Safety Education Village, to partner with middle school students to be "Road Safety Youth Leaders" to educate their peers, school staff, the community and families on road safety.
We are hopeful that this is the beginning of many grant opportunities our coalition will be eligible for as a Safe Kids coalition. Being a member of Safe Kids gives us access to these funding opportunities as well as high-quality educational and marketing materials.
Dementia Caregiver Support Group
Being a caregiver places new demands on your time and resources and can strain relationships. Our prevention coordinator, Jordan Taylor, has been working hard on compiling resources available to caregivers in our catchment. One of the areas that she has been looking into is for the caregivers of family members with dementia. She found that each county has a Dementia Caregiver Support Group. The Westfield Methodist Church also hosts a social program for older adults to give caregivers a break. If you have a chance, I encourage you to visit our Caregiver Navigation page to see all the resources available in our catchment.
