CEO Update
Presenting at a National Level
Last week, I had the honor to attend the 2019 EMSC All Grantee Meeting, hosted by HRSA in Washington, DC, with NYS Bureau of EMS and Trauma Systems (BEMSTS) Director Ryan Greenberg. Director Greenberg was able to present to a national audience on our Pediatric Emergency Care Coordinator (PECC) Learning Collaborative outcomes. The PECC collaborative has been an effort that STHCS and NYS BEMSTS have been working on together over the last nine months. Director Greenberg shared the state’s efforts to ensure pediatric readiness in emergency prehospital care by creating a Pediatric Prepared program to ensure the sustainability of the PECC program long term. The successes of this program will eventually guide pediatric preparedness in EMS protocols across the entire country!

Again, I’d like to thank Director Greenberg for his guidance on this initiative, as well as STEMS Coordinator Alicia Broadbent and PECC Program Coordinator Abbe Mostowy for their outstanding efforts with the program.
Appalachian Regional Commission Grant
I’m pleased to report we received a notification of funding from the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) for our EMS Simulation Lab project. Once received, this sizeable matching grant will allow us to purchase simulation manikins and state-of-the-art software to provide highly realistic training scenarios for EMS providers. Simulation education is a great supplement to classroom learning and clinical rotations and allows providers to learn and practice skills in a carefully controlled environment. Instructors can manipulate training sessions in real-time to mimic emergencies commonly (or not so commonly) experienced in the field. We will soon be working with our EMS instructional faculty to move the project forward. The availability of such equipment will significantly improve the quality of emergency prehospital care across Allegany, Cattaraugus, and Chautauqua counties.

As with any federal funding opportunity, the process was lengthy and detailed. I want to thank our grant development staff for working over the last several years to prepare the application. I also thank the great staff at the Southern Tier West Regional Planning & Development Board for overseeing the process.
