Alki UCC Weekly Messenger October 10, 2019
From Pastor Kelly
We are spending the Fall season envisioning bold traits of the future church. We have talked about Christian faith as both a courageous way of life and a prophetic voice into our current economic system.

This month we begin our final stretch with the holy story of Jeremiah, one of the saints that went before us who was inspired to rebuild when all he knew had been dismantled before his very eyes. We will spend the next three weeks talking about what it means to be the church in this neighborhood at this time in history.

Jeremiah responded to the dismantling of his faith community by purchasing land as an audacious commitment to rebuilding. What would be a similar symbol of hope in the Alki neighborhood?

Ever onward,
Pastor Kelly

Note: Pastor Kelly is attending an out-of-town conference exploring religious experience and encounter from October 10-12.
A Full Sunday at Alki UCC

October 6 was World Communion Sunday and, thanks to Maria Brodahl, Dave Smith and both Worship Teams, the Alki UCC congregation celebrated with a lovely variety of "breads from around the world" and an array of juice options.

Report: Seattle Crop Walk
Thank you to everyone who donated, walked and volunteered for this year’s Seattle Crop Hunger Walk on Alki Beach. We had about 100 walkers and volunteers for the Sunday afternoon walk, which began and ended at Alki UCC.

It was a beautiful day to stroll along the beach and everyone seemed to have a fun time. We are still tallying the final amounts for the entire Seattle walk but so far we know that Alki UCC blew through our $2,000 goal to raise close to $15,000! This was also a record high thanks to all of you who donated and thanks to Cindy Ogasawara who was able to triple her donation with the help of her employer, the Gates Foundation.

I will provide a final amount once the Walk treasurer has verified the total tally.

A special Thanks as well to Charlie Hinckley who managed the check-in process and helped clean up after all the walkers were done.

Thank you AGAIN, everyone!
— Shannon Peterson

Report: Admiral UCC Town Hall on Church Redevelopment Plans
This Tuesday, October 8, Admiral UCC hosted a Town Hall to update the neighborhood on their thoughts for responsible stewardship of their property. Pastor Andrew Conley-Holcom kicked off the evening
highlighting the church’s deep commitment to the Admiral neighborhood and the congregation-wide decision to remain at their current site and not relocate.

Admiral UCC shared an architectural plan that they commissioned: a two-building redevelopment with two five-story buildings which include housing, a brand new preschool facility, community space and a multi-use sanctuary.

These design ideas were prepared as a starting point for exploration to secure the long-term viability of Admiral UCC. Contact the Alki UCC Building & Grounds Team (Team Lead: Doug Gunwaldsen) with any questions.

UCC Call to Fight "Moral Atrocity"
Faith leaders rally for refugees, urge members to push Congress against refugee ban

United Church of Christ advocates, distressed and angered by the administration's plans to limit the number of refugees resettled in the United States to 18,000 in 2020, joined other faith leaders and humanitarian groups in the streets of Washington, D.C., on Friday, Sept. 27. The rally for refugees began in front of the White House and ended at the Trump hotel.

"It is a moral atrocity to turn our backs on persecuted people at a time when there are over 25 million refugees, more than at any other time in history..." Read more here.

Thank you, Wanda!
Next time you see longtime Alki UCC member Wanda Dray, please give her a hearty Thank You for managing our Thriftway Receipt Drive for many, many years. The effort has been an easy and painless way for Alki UCC to support the West Seattle Food Bank through the Thriftway grocery receipts you leave in the special basket by the front door.

Wanda has faithfully collected them every few months and delivered the receipts to the bank, which in turn receives a percentage of the total take from Thriftway ...a Win-Win-Win!

The church Council will discuss how to best continue the campaign at its Wednesday meeting.
