The Beauty & Wonder of Dwarf & Miniature Conifers
With Matt Timmer
Join Matt Timmer for a passionate discussion on the marvels of dwarf and miniature conifers – including general conifer care and maintenance; how and where to site your conifers for years of success and beauty; and success with conifers in container gardens. He will speak to the differences between large, dwarf, and miniature conifers (so cute), and explore the palette of texture, color, sizes and uses that conifers bring to the table.
Matt will include time for a Q & A session and invite you to join him for a walkabout after the workshop to meet some of his favorites. For new gardeners and “coneheads” alike! Free, but please pre-register at the Garden Center or call 828-645-3937.

|FROM WILMA: A question often asked this time of year is “Are my evergreen trees dying? They are turning yellow inside and dropping needles.” It is a natural process for the older inner needles of evergreens to turn yellow and shed in fall. This is not always obvious in some evergreens, but very noticeable in others like Eastern White Pines. New needles are formed every year and there is an overlap between green needles and those ready to fall.|
Needled evergreens are conifers (cone bearing) but not all conifers are evergreen. A few conifers lose all their needles in fall. These include larch, bald cypress, and dawn redwood. Their bronze foliage adds beauty to the fall landscape.
Conifers range in size from miniatures to large trees like giant redwoods. There is a conifer for most landscape situations and can be planted most any time of the year. They were especially striking in the brief snowstorm earlier this week.
Matt Timmer is presenting a dwarf and miniature conifer workshop Saturday, November 16th at 10AM. He will also include time for a Q&A session for other conifers and will showcase some of his favorites.
