|Don't Work Wet Soil|
The ground is too wet to work right now. Be ready for spring! As soon as the ground dries out jump into action to work your garden beds for spring. Vegetable gardeners may want to add lime to their soil if not added in the fall. Cover your garden bed with mulch to prevent weeds (we recommend wheat straw for veggie gardens).
Not sure about your garden soil pH? We have quick test kits for purchase in our Garden Shop, or you can pick up an NC State Soil Test Box here at the Garden Center.
Learn more about how and why to test your soil.
The NC State Soil Test is free from April thru most of November. They charge a $4 fee from Thanksgiving thru March (peak time for farmers).
Heat Mat Magic
Yes. They work. Really well. Heat mats make a huge difference in seed germination rates!
Garden seeds won’t germinate until the soil reaches a certain temperature, and heat mats trick the seeds into thinking the soil IS warm. Germination rates and germination times are dramatically improved. Once germinated, remove your seed tray from the heat mat and use it for a different tray of seeds.
Heat mats now in stock in our Garden Shop.

|FROM WILMA: February is the shortest month (one extra day in 2020). From Groundhog Day at the beginning to Valentine’s Day and President’s Day in the middle to Mardi Gras near the end, there are many events and observances. It is a month recognizing Black History, Wild Bird Feeding, Heart Health Awareness, and Friendship. It is also National Chocolate Month!|
Many things are on the horizon at the Garden Center and Farm this month. We are implementing a Point of Sale inventory system this Friday. Please keep your fingers crossed for us! The Garden Shop is being filled with new and fun items. Fruit trees and other trees and shrubs will be arriving soon. Lots of perennials as well as early veggies are being transplanted at the Farm.
The Garden Center is a great place for a preview of spring. Feel free to stop by and browse through the greenhouse, nursery, and Garden Shop. It is not too early to think about your valentine or your seed selections (thanks, Debbie, for an attractive display) as well as other gardening supplies.
On Feb. 22, get inspired by our Winter Interest in the Garden talk with garden designer, Mardi Letson.
