Upcoming Virtual Reggae Festivals & Events
24-Hour Global Event: International Reggae Day - July 1 - Big success
Each year, July 1 is recognized as International Reggae Day. This year was 24 hours of celebration for reggae culture and its influence on Jamaican music. This event had a global media reach and was hosted in Kingston.

The objective is to celebrate the best of Jamaican creativity and its worldwide impact using the power of music, media and communication technology to unite nations. The virtual event included panels, virtual concerts and more

Music is at Jamaica’s heart. Every pulsing beat pushes forth the creativity and soul of a bold, strong and resilient people.

There is no beat that is too difficult to complement with the art of movement; no tune that doesn’t make us groove. No condition that we cannot master through the rhythm and word combination. We feel the vibrations, we live the lyrics and we redefine our space and place with music.

Jamaican music is world famous, not only for making you want to sing along and shake your hips, but also for being a powerful tool for ‘change.’ Although Reggae is commonly used to define Jamaica’s music, the island’s traditional or folk music is rich – heavy with the substance of African rhythms and collective experiences – and has continued to evolve into an extraordinary legacy. Drawing from several different influences, our music reflects the tides of the time with the sounds and rhythms, each possessing its own distinctive beat.

From New York to London, New Dehli to Johannesburg and from Brazil and Colombia to South Africa and Kenya, over 30 countries will be participated in IRD 2020.

"MARCH" — Chezidek’s 2nd Single from Highly Anticipated Album,"HELLO AFRICA"
Produced by: Desbert ‘ Chezidek’ Johnson
Executive Producers: Tad A. Dawkins, and Tad A. Dawkins Jnr.

In the current social climate, Chezidek has stepped up and continues his trend of producing conscious music with a positive message.

His new single MARCH is a call for mobility and equality; reflecting the global movement of ‘justice for all’.

“So much things going on with black people ‘round the world, so wi have a lot to sey,” Chezidek disclosed.

The roots singer’s latest album, Hello Africa, will be released on July 23, 2020 by Tad’s International Record and will go down as a special day for Chezidek; it is also the birthday of Ethiopian Emperor Haile Selassie I.

The date is important to Chezidek who, like all Rastafarians, revere Selassie as an omnipotent figure. Produced by his Cheziberry Records, he believes Hello Africa is his most hard-hitting work to date, boosted by songs like
"Because I’m Black", and "March."

"Because I’m Black", a jab at institutionalized racism, sets the tone for Hello Africa and the second single "March"
calls to global unification and action to tackle the injustices of the world.

Keep your ears open and receive the inspiration to MARCH!

The video for Richie Spice's "Together We Stand" has been released. Following the release of the album of the same name, the video sets the tone for the albums collection of deeply impactful and uplifting anthems. The physical release will follow this Summer.

Directed by Shane from Wikid Media, the powerful video is a visual interpretation that draws on the strength of unity during uncertain times. The video premiered on VP Records YouTube page and Trace this past weekend.

The single, “Together We Stand” was written in 2005, as a call for unity; in 2020, the soulful, gospel infused song, released in October 2019, has taken on a heightened relevance as millions all over the world experience isolation, economic devastation, sickness and the loss of loved ones resulting from the Covid-19 plague. Produced by Richie and Clive Hunt for Element Music Group, “Together We Stand” was selected as the theme for the recent Covid-19 relief Telethon Jamaica Together We Stand, broadcast April 12 on Jamaica’s national TV network TVJ and streamed on VP Records’ YouTube Channel.
Richie builds upon his well-established, exalted musical standards throughout the 15 tracks on Together We Stand which was recorded at various studios in Kingston, Jamaica, including the Marley family’s Tuff Gong, and features productions by veterans Clive Hunt, Stephen Stanley and Element Music Group (formerly 5th Element), with A&R direction from Richard “Shams the Producer” Browne. The album includes features from Chronixx, Dre Island and Kathryn Aria.

With over millions of streams across all platforms and known for his core hit reggae songs “Earth A Run Red,” ‘Youth Dem So Cold,” “Marijuana,” “Brown Skin” and “Ghetto Girl,” Richie Spice has now recorded 9 albums for VP Records in his career including his debut album Spice In Your Life which earned unanimous critical praise, Streets To Africa, Gideon Boot which debuted at no. 1 on the Billboard Reggae chart, in May 2008 and Book of Job in 2011.

On the album, Richie Spice states, “We have grown over the years, so this album comes with a difference,” Richie acknowledges. “My responsibility is to use the talent God gave me as an instrument to uplift.

Rygin King shot - Female companion killed in gun attack
Popular Montego Bay-based dancehall artiste Rygin King was released from the operating theatre last night after being shot three times by men in Struie district, Westmoreland, yesterday. The entertainer, who is still in hospital, was reportedly chased into a gully and shot by an unrelenting gunman. The artiste was hit in the back and leg.
A woman, who is said to be Rygin King's girlfriend, was killed in the gun attack as she sat in a car with two children. A third person - a male, was shot and injured.

The Tuff artiste, whose given name is Matthew Smith, was part of an entourage that left his community in Norwood, St James, sometime after 2 p.m. and was travelling through Westmoreland. According to the police, one of vehicles in which they were travelling was involved in an accident with a motor car being driven by a female driver. Following the crash, Rygin King and his team stopped at the location for approximately 45 minutes, assessing the damage and conversing with the female driver. While there, another car drove on the scene and one man alighted with a handgun.

Opened fire multiple times
He reportedly hurled a barrage of expletives at the entertainer and began chasing him around the car. The armed man opened fire multiple times, in the process hitting 28-year-old Sashalee Blackwood, who was sitting inside the vehicle with the two children. Blackwood is a customer service representative of Irwin Meadows, also of St James.

Police said that the third victim, a 25-year-old recording artiste, was also shot in his leg. The man then chased Rygin King into the gully and shot him.

As news of the artiste's shooting spread yesterday, well-wishers urged Rygin King to hang in there. Gaza Vice-President, Sikka Rymes, had some encouraging words. "Don't let go when di stress come, if I can do it you can do it too," Sikka Rymes captioned a video, which showed him being wheeled into a hospital last year December.

Miraculous recovery
Sikka Rymes, who was shot three times and critically injured in the vicinity of Sovereign Centre, has since made an almost miraculous recovery.

Over on the Instagram page of Gaza leader, Vybz Kartel, the message was similar. "Don't give up youth! All who believe in God send up a prayer fi Rygin King please!" This plea was endorsed by rapper Beach Boii, Lisa Mercedes, ZJ Chrome and others.

Rygin King shot to prominence with the single, Tuff, and cemented his status with a performance at Reggae Sumfest 2018. He has since found success with a number of singles, which incorporate elements of commercial trap and R&B including Powerful, Star Life and Clean. Having cut his European tour short in March, owing to the COVID-19 pandemic, he was focusing on an album, which features production work from Colin 'Bulby' York, Sly and Robbie and English DJ, and producer Toddla T.

‘Death in the Arena’ - Tony Matterhorn to battle Pink Panther in clash July 4
Two of Jamaica's roughest selectors, Tony Matterhorn and Pink Panther, are slated to face-off in a duel dubbed 'Death in the Arena', which is set to take place on July 4 in a virtual sound clash.

"Coming off the high from the Beenie-Bounty Verzuz battle, there is a renewed love for clashes and we want to get the people who are perhaps the most important part of any clash involved in the conversation," Chauncey Henry, promoter of the event, said.

Henry told THE WEEKEND STAR that his aim is to celebrate selectors and keep them at the centre of Jamaica's musical culture.
"We can't leave the DJs out of it and so we are doing this to show that they are just as important as the artistes when it comes on to clashes."

Fuel the culture

Henry, a New York-based attorney-at-law, said his reason for getting involved in the promotion is purely to fuel the culture.

"I know from a likkle yute growing up what it takes to build and establish a sound system. I don't have to be a sound man to do this. Panther is a nine-time world champion and when I talk to him, I hear the passion in his voice about this, and the same goes for Matterhorn, and nobody is stepping up to give these men the highlight they deserve, at least not until it benefits the person who is giving them the highlight," he said.
"This is a platform for Jamaicans by Jamaicans and there is no commercialisation because we can't put a price on this kind of musical greatness."

Pink Panther said that this will be his first online clash, and he is very excited. "I'm going up against Matterhorn and so you know that will be an exciting showdown. I'm ready and prepared," he said.
Tony Matterhorn is looking forward to the event.

"Events like these are vital to the musical culture, as it is important to show that sound clash as we call it, is still prevalent and is still active. Over the years the clash culture has deteriorated to some extent and so it's still good to know that the clash fans are out there, and it's important for us to keep this part of the culture going and buzzing just the same," he said.

The showdown will be streamed from Walshy Fire’s Instagram and YouTube accounts, which have almost 16 million followers in total. It will also be available on Apple TV, Roku and Boxcast through a simple ‘Death in the Arena’ search. Smartphone users will also be able to watch the epic battle through a special app expected to go live two days before the event. The app will be available for download from the Apple app store for iPhone users and Google Play Store for Android users. Henry said his team is going all out to ensure everyone who wants to tune in to the battle is not denied that opportunity.

Record Label Issachar Musik artist spotlight: Triple Blaxx
Triple Blaxxx is a Jamaican  singer and songwriter who has been recording and performing  music for three decades. His new hip-hop, R&B  song “Into the Jungle” takes the listener on a journey into the world of cannabis in California. Released on the Issachar Muzik label, the song features rapping from Dylan Judah an artist that Triple Blaxxx has collaborated with in the past as their duo Black Judah. The rhythm was produced  by Kirk “Kirkledove” Bennett whose producer credits include Busy Signal and Etana.

Enjoy music video “Into the Jungle” that features scenes from in the jungle and people doing their thing out there, those that never leave the hill. “The video also features scenes in Santa Barbara and Los Angeles, as cityscapes that can be representative of the jungle.

The lyrical content for “Into The Jungle” as Triple Blaxxx was inspired by experiences the artist had in the cannabis scene. As he explains it, “I was up north (Northern California) with some people and they took me way out to the their place. I’m just vibing, and we met some people, people who is protecting their vibe. I was looking at the environment, the different look and vibe from the people and the landscape. Also the whole California vibe, how Cali embrace the whole thing and how they go about it.”

As for what the future holds, the music genre classifications that will be released by Triple Blaxxx will consist of Hip-Hop crossed with Reggae, straight Dancehall,  or hip hop crossed with a little dancehall.

Issachar Muzik founder Jah Lloyd Shaw has worked with Triple Blaxxx since he first recorded under the name Sugar Black. The song “Into the Jungle”  marks the first time the Issachar Muzik label releases a song in the hip-hop genre.  As Triple Blaxxx explains the alliance with Issachar Muzik “Jah Lloyd was always a person first. When he said he was going to bring back the label, I was like ‘man I’m in’.  As for the alliance with Tuff Gong International for distribution, Triple Blaxxx notes “We need to support the Tuff Gong brand as it is one of the true roots companies in the music industry locally in Jamaica”.

The origin of his stage name, Triple Blaxxx (born Patrick Hall) is based on the variations on his previous stage names and artist collaborations first as Sugar Black, then as Sugar Black and Lebanchuleh, and recently as a part of Black Judah. Thus the triple aspect, it’s three different versions that have led to the Triple Blaxxx of today.

A native of Kingston, Jamaica, Triple Blaxxx got his start as a vocalist in school.  At age 15, the teacher was organizing a choir and when she listened to his voice, she singled him out as a strong vocalist. At age 18 he entered the annual Tastee Talent Contest, the same competition that produced artists such as Beenie Man, Mr.Vegas and Yellow Man.
Winning third prize that year, the artist and another artist named Doctor Nuts collaborated on a song called “Baby Mama Too Bad”.

With strong family ties in Jamaica, Triple Blaxxx grew up with his mother and father in Kingston, spending summers at his grandmothers’ house in the countryside of White Hall, Westmoreland, Jamaica where he was born.

Music has taken the artist to festival stages around the world including Sting, Sumfest, Western Consciousness and Rebel Salute in Jamaica as well as several prestigious European reggae festivals and those in the Caribbean. Triple Blaxxx has completed several tours including recent runs with artists Gyptian and Warrior King.  Los Angeles-based band Detour Posse (Barrington Levy) has performed as supporting musicians for the artist most often in the live setting.

In Jah´s Name We Pray -
Black Lives Matter
Black Lives Matter began as a call to action in response to state-sanctioned violence and anti-Black racism. Our intention from the very beginning was to connect Black people from all over the world who have a shared desire for justice to act together in their communities. The impetus for that commitment was, and still is, the rampant and deliberate violence inflicted on us by the state.

The Black Lives Matter Global Network is as powerful as it is because of our membership, our partners, our supporters, our staff, and you. Our continued commitment to liberation for all Black people means we are continuing the work of our ancestors and fighting for our collective freedom because it is our duty.

Every day, we recommit to healing ourselves and each other, and to co-creating alongside comrades, allies, and family a culture where each person feels seen, heard, and supported.

We acknowledge, respect, and celebrate differences and commonalities.
We work vigorously for freedom and justice for Black people and, by extension, all people.

We intentionally build and nurture a beloved community that is bonded together through a beautiful struggle that is restorative, not depleting.

We are unapologetically Black in our positioning. In affirming that Black Lives Matter, we need not qualify our position. To love and desire freedom and justice for ourselves is a prerequisite for wanting the same for others.

We see ourselves as part of the global Black family, and we are aware of the different ways we are impacted or privileged as Black people who exist in different parts of the world.

We are guided by the fact that all Black lives matter, regardless of actual or perceived sexual identity, gender identity, gender expression, economic status, ability, disability, religious beliefs or disbeliefs, immigration status, or location.

We make space for transgender brothers and sisters to participate and lead.
We are self-reflexive and do the work required to dismantle cisgender privilege and uplift Black trans folk, especially Black trans women who continue to be disproportionately impacted by trans-antagonistic violence.

We build a space that affirms Black women and is free from sexism, misogyny, and environments in which men are centered.

We practice empathy. We engage comrades with the intent to learn about and connect with their contexts.

We make our spaces family-friendly and enable parents to fully participate with their children. We dismantle the patriarchal practice that requires mothers to work “double shifts” so that they can mother in private even as they participate in public justice work.

We disrupt the Western-prescribed nuclear family structure requirement by supporting each other as extended families and “villages” that collectively care for one another, especially our children, to the degree that mothers, parents, and children are comfortable.

We foster a queer‐affirming network. When we gather, we do so with the intention of freeing ourselves from the tight grip of heteronormative thinking, or rather, the belief that all in the world are heterosexual (unless s/he or they disclose otherwise).

We cultivate an intergenerational and communal network free from ageism. We believe that all people, regardless of age, show up with the capacity to lead and learn.
We embody and practice justice, liberation, and peace in our engagements with one another.
