 Tithonia Is Blooming!
FROM WILMA: The tomato hornworm decimating some of my tomato plants was found and became fish food! It probably has relatives still hiding among the plants. Tomatoes are beginning to ripen and last night we enjoyed a vegetable dinner that included tomatoes, green beans, and corn from my small garden.
It seems dozens of Tithonia (Mexican sunflower) self-seeded in the garden. Swallowtail butterflies are beginning to visit them. A large, very prickly thistle popped up in the middle of the garden. I plan to leave it for now as it attracts pollinators and is food for goldfinch. A few Monarchs are beginning to visit the milkweed but I haven’t found any caterpillars yet. I have hopes!
Late August is the ideal time to sow perennial seeds and to divide iris and peonies. I am seeding lettuce in containers on the deck now. Cilantro from spring planting is beginning to self-seed. Collards and a few other fall veggies are going in the garden soon.
