WikiLeaks is a the logical consequence of an ongoing process of expanded secrecy: If the truth can no longer be examined because everything is kept secret, if investigation reports on the U.S. government’s torture policy are kept secret and when even large sections of the published summary are redacted, leaks are at some point inevitably the result. WikiLeaks is the consequence of rampant secrecy and reflects the lack of transparency in our modern political system. There are, of course, areas where secrecy can be vital. But if we no longer know what our governments are doing and the criteria they are following, if crimes are no longer being investigated, then it represents a grave danger to societal integrity.

Multiple media outlets are reporting that Michael Kopelman, a professor of neuropsychiatry at King’s College London, said that Julian Assange has an “intense suicidal preoccupation” while awaiting the decision on whether or not he will be extradited to the US, where he faces up to 175 years in a maximum high security prison on espionage charges.
said the 49-year-old hacker had experienced “auditory hallucinations” in which he heard “derogatory and persecutory” voices.
“The voices are things like, ‘You are dust, you are dead, we are coming to get you,’” he told the hearing.

As the UN Special Rapporteur on Torture and, before that, as a Red Cross delegate, I have seen lots of horrors and violence and have seen how quickly peaceful countries like Yugoslavia or Rwanda can transform into infernos. At the roots of such developments are always a lack of transparency and unbridled political or economic power combined with the naivete, indifference and malleability of the population. Suddenly, that which always happened to the other – unpunished torture, rape, expulsion and murder – can just as easily happen to us or our children. And nobody will care. I can promise you that.

Firms selected for the project include telecoms AT&T, Nokia and Ericsson, intelligence and infotech contractor Booz-Allen Hamilton, the research wing of General Electric, GE Research, and a subsidiary of aerospace giant General Dynamics.
One effort spearheaded by AT&T at Nellis Air Force Base in Nevada will apply 5G to “distributed command and control” systems in order to “aid in Air, Space, and Cyberspace lethality,” enhancing communications for mobile command centers in combat scenarios.
At Washington state’s Joint Base Lewis-McChord, AT&T will also work alongside Booz-Allen and two other firms to develop 5G-enabled virtual reality technology for training, mission planning and even “operational use,” though the Pentagon provided no examples of the latter application.
"Projects will include piloting 5G-enabled augmented/virtual reality for mission planning and training, testing 5G-enabled Smart Warehouses, and evaluating 5G technologies to enhance distributed command and control."

After the election of 2016 it was discovered that the US government had violated its core principles in that certain public officials used their position to literally negate the 1st Amendment, 4th and 14th Amendments to our Constitution and use what was known to be a false document to spy on a political campaign through use of a FISA warrant. If our leaders and potential leaders cannot escape the deeds of those members of the political elite who do not respect America’s core values how can a private citizen’s rights be safe?
Legalized in the USA PATRIOT Act, the surveillance authorities expired in March of 2020, when Congress failed to come to an agreement on their reform and/or reauthorization. Since that time, Senators Lee and Leahy have made an official inquiry to AG William Barr and DNI John Ratcliffe, asking under what legal umbrella the surveillance of American citizens is continuing. More recently, forty-one Congressmen sent a letter asking detailed questions as to the legality of the continued surveillance. At this time, neither letter has resulted in a reply.
Mobile phones can contain anywhere from four to 13 different antennas. There are at least four radios (transmitters and/or receivers) in mobile phones made today: cellular, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and GPS. Some phones will have three more radios: 802.15.4 (930 MHz and lower), FM radio, and magnetic Near-Field Communication (NFC).
If we disregard the NFC frequency, which is really a magnetic field link, all these radios operate from from 88 MHz (FM radio) to almost 6 GHz (high Wi-Fi band). The most widely used radios in a mobile phone (the phone itself, GPS, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth) operate from about 800 MHz to 5.5 GHz, which converts to a wavelength range of 15 in. down to a little over 2 in. One-quarter of a wavelength at that range is about 4 inches down to 0.5 in. This says that only the 5.5 GHz band is a good fit for a typical mobile phone and that most of the antennas in such a confined space don't work as well as they could. The FM radio band has a wavelength of about 10 ft, so a tiny antenna will have terrible efficiency. Luckily, most commercial FM radio stations blast out about 100 kW.
Massive MIMO EMF Exposure Estimation: Tools, Models, And Initial Measurements

Massive MIMO (multiple-input / multiple-output) — like mmWave and small cell technology — is considered a key enabler of tomorrow’s 5G networks. It uses antennae composed of tens of sub-elements, elements that allow radio beams to be steered to mobile users’ exact location. This, in turn, makes for significantly higher data rates and excellent coverage, even when line-of-sight between the antenna and the user is lacking, or when used at (indoor) settings with a lot of reflection.
The introduction of such radically new wireless network technologies necessitates novel approaches to model and estimate the resulting electromagnetic field (EMF) exposure. So far, calculating the electromagnetic radiation emitted by a mobile network has been relatively straightforward, considering two main parameters: the relative distance between user and antenna, plus the direction of the radio signal with respect to the antenna (radiation pattern).
However, steerable radio beams increase this task’s complexity. Imagine a scenario with two people sitting on a bench in the local park. In a 3G or 4G setting, both will be exposed — from head to toe — to the electromagnetic radiation emitted by mobile antennae in their vicinity. But, in a Massive MIMO context, due to the beam steering effect, individuals might experience totally different EMF exposure levels — even if they are only a few feet apart.
In this article, novel tools and models for Massive MIMO EMF exposure estimation are presented, as well as compared to existing approaches. We also provide more background on the EMF exposure measurements conducted at Europe’s first real-life Massive MIMO-enabled 5G New Radio (NR) trials in the 3.5 GHz band. Finally, we make a first attempt at interpreting those numbers, using the exposure standards from the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP).
Massive MIMO’s Secret Sauce: Pre-coding
In a 4G setting, antennae typically radiate in one broad beam of 120°. Massive MIMO-enabled 5G networks, however, foresee in a spatial channel for each user. Complex pre-coding techniques are used to alter the radio signal’s amplitude and phase, allowing beams to be steered in specific directions. As such, users can be provided with a personal hotspot.

Massive MIMO system is very promising for 5G communications. The achievable channel capacity can be greatly increased for the massive MIMO system, especially when the numbers of the MIMO antennas in both the smartphone and base station are comparable. It is hence very attractive to deploy a large number of MIMO antennas in the smartphone so as to effectively increase the channel capacity. However, owing to the very limited space in the smartphone, it is very challenging to embed a large number of MIMO antennas (for example, at least eight antennas) therein with good isolation and low envelope correlation coefficients (ECCs).
In this article, promising 8 and 16 MIMO antennas in the smartphone formed by using the quad-antenna linear (QAL) array as a building block for the 3.5-GHz LTE MIMO operation are presented. The MIMO antennas are operated in the 3.5-GHz band (3400~3600 MHz), which has been recently identified in WRC-15 (World Radio communication conference 2015) for global mobile broadband services in the future. The achievable channel capacity of the 8-antenna array formed by two QAL arrays disposed along two opposite edges can reach about 37 bps/Hz for the 8×8 MIMO operation. On the other hand, the 16-antenna array formed by four QAL arrays can reach a channel capacity of about 68 bps/Hz for the 16×16 MIMO operation. Related results are presented in the article.
Recently, the calculated MIMO channel capacities for the proposed compact 8 MIMO antennas are verified using the MIMO OTA (over-the-air) test platform built in the National Sun Yat-sen University (see the attached figure). With a 20-MHz bandwidth, the obtained throughput of the 8 MIMO antennas in the smartphone for the 8 x 4 MIMO operation at 20-dB Signal-to-noise ratio and 256 QAM has been measured to be about 425 MB per second. For operated in the 8×8 MIMO system, the throughput is expected to be about 800 MB per second and will be tested in the very near future. With a wider bandwidth, the throughput can be easily larger than 1 GB per second. The results indicate that the Massive MIMO operation with at least eight antennas in the smartphone is promising for 5G mobile communications.

Investigations of MIMO Antenna for Smart Mobile Handsets and Their User Proximity

In this chapter, a quad-band monopole MIMO antenna covering LTE13/14, GSM1800, PCS1900, and LTE2600 is presented. The proposed antenna consists of an antenna and parasitic plate which resonates at 762, 1787, and 2550 MHz with good return loss. By introducing the vertical plate shifting of lower frequency from 937 to 762 MHz is observed. Enhancement of bandwidth and isolation is observed by cutting slot on the ground and by placing the metal strip in between the antennas. With these features, as well as compact and simple configuration, the proposed MIMO antenna is appropriate for the mobile handsets. The study of user proximity confirms that the proposed antenna suitable for mobile handsets.

Previous work has shown that cells use electromagnetic fields in migration, which is mediated in part by a molecule called superoxide, a reactive oxygen species that seems to function like a molecular antenna, picking up on electrical and magnetic signals. Patients with type 2 diabetes have been shown to have elevated levels of superoxide, which has been linked to vascular issues and diabetic retinopathy. To investigate how these electromagnetic fields might be exerting their effects, the researchers depleted superoxide molecules from the animals’ livers and found that exposure to the fields didn’t have any effect on blood sugar or insulin resistance.
“We think that that molecule is what’s signaling a lot of the other things that happen in the cell to adapt and then to go on to improve blood sugar,” says Huang.
“It was very intriguing what they found, and potentially very important if you could reverse hepatic insulin resistance with static magnetic electric fields,” says Douglas Rothman, who studies metabolism and metabolic control at Yale University and did not participate in the work. It would be nice, he adds, “to establish in a simpler system—for example, a non-biological system—a measure showing that the impact of the magnetic and the electric fields on superoxide reactivity was significant.”
 The spatial and temporal extents of the embryonic field are dynamic, and within the field is a collection of interacting cells out of which a particular organ is formed. As a group, the cells within a given morphogenetic field are constrained: thus, cells in a limb field will become a limb tissue, those in a cardiac field will become heart tissue. However, specific cellular programming of individual cells in a field is flexible: an individual cell in a cardiac field can be redirected via cell-to-cell signaling to replace specific damaged or missing cells.Imaginal discs in insect larvae are examples of morphogenetic fields.

Study of this phenomenon led to the discovery of the homeobox genes, and started a revolution in the understanding of development in multi-celled animals.
Imaginal cells are tissue-specific progenitors allocated in embryogenesis that remain quiescent during embryonic and larval life. During Drosophila metamorphosis, most larval cells die. Pupal and adult tissues form from imaginal cells. Clonal analysis and fate mapping of single, identified cells show that tracheal system remodeling at metamorphosis involves a classical imaginal cell population and a population of differentiated, functional larval tracheal cells that reenter the cell cycle and regain developmental potency. In late larvae, both populations are activated and proliferate, spread over and replace old branches, and diversify into various stalk and coiled tracheolar cells under control of fibroblast growth factor signaling. Thus, Drosophila pupal/adult tissue progenitors can arise both by early allocation of multipotent cells and late return of differentiated cells to a multipotent state, even within a single tissue." “You wake up, and as you’re emerging into consciousness, you feel this horrible dread, this real wretchedness. Immediately, your mind starts to race,” says neuroscientist Lisa Feldman Barrett. “You think about all the crap that you have to do at work — you have that mountain of email which you will never dig yourself out of, the phone calls you have to return, and that important meeting across town. You’re going to have to fight traffic, you’ll be late picking your kids up, your dog is sick, and what are you going to make for dinner? Oh my God. What is wrong with my life?”
OK, you may not have the dog, the kids or the meeting across town, but what about the rest — the cascading catalog of to-dos, the sinking feeling that you’re behind even before your day has started, and the headlong tumble into despair?
According to Barrett, those last two sentences of the above scenario — the “Oh my God. What is wrong with my life?” part — are especially treacherous. Why? Because too often we come to the sweeping and inaccurate conclusion that our life stinks.
But we don’t have to take this misery lying down, says Barrett. Through her research at the Affective Science Laboratory at Northeastern University in Boston, she has come to some mind-shaking realizations about human emotions. Contrary to what many of us think, our emotions are neither hard-wired into our brains nor are they out of our control. Instead, our emotions are guesses that our brains generate on the fly, based upon our past experiences.
As she explains in her book How Emotions Are Made — read an excerpt here — “Anytime you feel miserable, it’s because you are experiencing an unpleasant effect due to physical sensations. Your brain will try to predict causes for those sensations, and the more concepts you know and the more instances you can construct, the more effectively you can recategorize to manage your emotions and regulate your behavior.”
When we start that AM spiral into anxiety, as Barrett explains, “Your brain is searching to find an explanation for those sensations in your body that you experience as wretchedness.” But, she adds, “Those sensations might not be an indication that anything is wrong with your life … Maybe you’re tired. Maybe you didn’t sleep enough. Maybe you’re hungry. Maybe you’re dehydrated.”
So, the next time you feel gripped by morning dread, she suggests you ask yourself: “Could this have a purely physical cause?”
Check in and see: What’s going on with your body? When the alarm went off, were you roused from a deep sleep and you’re rattled as a result? Or, perhaps you’re too hot, too cold, achy or itchy …
Barrett says, “You have the capacity to turn down the dial on emotional suffering and its consequences for your life by learning how to construct your experiences differently.”
