November Garden Hints
  • Mow your cool-season lawn to 3” high if not already done.
  • Fertilize your lawn with slow release fertilizer in November. Otherwise, wait until February.
  • On newly seeded lawns use a leaf-blower, rather than a rake, to remove leaves.
  • Clean up your summer veggie garden residues.
  • Clean and store tools for winter.
  • Use fiberglass rod tunnels with floating row cover to protect cold season crops.
  • Wait until late winter to prune fruit trees.
  • Great time to edge flowerbeds and apply fresh mulch to beautify for the holidays.
  • Fall is a good time to apply lime if needed.
 365 Seasons in a Year
FROM WILMA:  Guy Sternberg, coauthor of Native Trees for North American Landscapes, states there are 365 seasons in a year. Many angles, the time, and weather changes influence the way we view trees and other plants throughout each day. I’m not sure we experience 365 seasons a year but in the mountains  day-to-day and even hourly changes are noticeable, especially in autumn.

In a 24-hour period a couple of weeks ago we had a frosty morn, March-like winds, balmy temperatures in the afternoon, and a beautiful autumn sunset. I welcomed frost that “did in” some weeds and tired annuals. There are "last roses of summer" and other lingering blossoms. My oakleaf hydrangea and Japanese maples are at their peak of fall color now.

Now is a great time to get outside and enjoy the seasons of the season!

NCDA Soil Tests are free through the month of November. Cooperative Extension suggests having your soil test boxes in the mail by Nov. 20 to make sure they are received by Nov. 30. From Dec. 1 thru March 31 there is a $4 fee for soil testing. Pick up the Soil Test Boxes at your Cooperative Extension Center, or at Reems Creek Nursery at our outside checkout counter. Just ask us. Here is a link to the form you will need to fill out.

If your soil test indicates that Lime is needed, apply lime in the fall so it is activated in time for your spring garden.
