Bunny Wailer Dies: Founding Member Of Bob Marley’s The Wailers Was 73
Reggae pioneer Bunny Wailer, who founded The Wailers with his childhood friend Bob Marley, died today at Medical Associates Hospital in Kingston, Jamaica. He was 73, and had been hospitalized since July following a stroke.

A cause of death has not been released, but his passing was confirmed by Jamaica’s Culture Minister Olivia Grange.

Born Neville O’Riley Livingston, Wailer was the last surviving member of the reggae group that shared his name. He left The Wailers in 1974 to launch a decades-long solo career and was awarded Jamaican Government’s Order of Merit in 2017.

During his 1963-74 tenure with Marley and The Wailers; other co-founder Peter Tosh, Wailer saw their songs “Simmer Down” (1964), “Stir It Up” (1967) and “Get Up, Stand Up” (1973) become national hits. Those songs would go on to become iconic, foundational works of reggae music, with “Stir It Up” becoming an international smash in 1972 for singer Johnny Nash.
Johnny Nash Dies: ‘I Can See Clearly Now’ Singer-Songwriter Was 80
Wailer won three Grammy Awards, the first in 1991 for Best Reggae Album (Time Will Tell: A Tribute To Bob Marley) and then in 1995 (Crucial! Roots Classics) and 1997 (Hall of Fame: A Tribute to Bob Marley’s 50th Anniversary).

Marley died of cancer in 1981, and Tosh was killed in 1987 during a burglary at his home in Jamaica.

39th annual IRAWMA to be held under theme ‘Reggae/World Music Rise’ - Public voting begins March 20 — Cast your vote today
The International Reggae and World Music Awards (IRAWMA), the event which celebrates the best of reggae and world music, will, on Sunday, May 2, present a stellar virtual gala to honour musicians and industry professionals for their creativity and contributions during 2020.

Last year unleashed unprecedented socio-economic challenges on the industry, with its effects felt across the musical spectrum, resulting in a halt on in-person events and live concerts, as well as travel and tour cancellations. Many who directly and indirectly rely on the industry as a source of income were only narrowly able to eke out a living.

“Despite the hurdles, some music creators birthed incredible works to uplift millions globally [and] IRAWMA will celebrate and award them, under the theme, ‘Reggae/World Music Rise’. The virtual fête will feature performances by international musicians and entertainers. With an audience across continents cheering on nominees and winners of various genres – reggae, dancehall, gospel, Afrobeat, calypso, soca and Latin music, it will be spectacular,” said Rosemary Duncan, public relations manager at IRAWMA.

Nominations by music connoisseurs (artistes, producers, promoters, songwriters, record labels, entertainment media bloggers, managers, agents, engineers) commenced February 1 and ends on March 10. Public voting runs from Monday, March 20, through to midnight, Tuesday, April 20. Everyone is invited to be a part of this important process, by selecting the best, in each category for 2020, including awardees for the inaugural Toots Hibbert Award for Best Reggae Album/CD and the Best Virtual Showcase.

Voters are urged to consider the social relevance of materials, originality, sales, local, national and international virtual performances and social media activity.

Votes should be cast at www.irawma.com

A reputable accounting firm will tally votes to determine the winner for each category.
President of IRAWMA, Ephraim Martin, further emphasised, “One person, one vote. Vote for the best for the year 2020. Not because he or she is your artiste or on your label, as one knows when an artiste is on a ballot and should not be there.”

Top Virtual entertainer
Martin further added, “This year, because of the pandemic, we have reduced the number of categories for awards to 32, plus the Special Awards of Honour. And we have added two new categories, Virtual Entertainer of the Year and Best Virtual Showcase. We have also renamed the Best Soukous Entertainer to Best Afrobeats Entertainer. The first-ever Toots Hibbert Award for Best Album/CD will be sponsored by the Ministry of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport.”

No National Arena viewing for Daddy U-Roy - March 28 funeral at Dovecot

The body of legendary toaster Ewart ‘U-Roy’ Beckford will not lie in state at the National Arena as reported in some sections of the media, the Ministry of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport confirmed to The Gleaner.
“There will not be a viewing at the National Arena because of COVID-19,” said Oliver Watt, director of public relations and corporate communications, Ministry of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport.

“We will announce funeral arrangements at a later date. At that time, Minister Grange will give a statement,” Watt added.

Marcia Smikle, U-Roy’s partner of over 40 years, told The Gleaner that initially the discussions had centred around plans to host two viewings, one at the National Arena in Kingston on March 25, and the other at Perry’s Funeral Home in Spanish Town. Perry’s, which handled the funeral for late reggae icon Frederick ‘Toots’ Hibbert, is also managing the burial of the legendary deejay.

“Because of the virus and the restrictions in place, people will not be able to attend the funeral, so they were looking forward to get their last look and say their final farewells at the viewings. But if the COVID numbers are rising, then the best decision must be taken. I know everybody going to be disappointed about this; we really wanted to give people a chance to pay their respects because he was a public figure and also a very popular man,” Smikle said.

Sgt. Remo Releases First Ever All-Spanish Single 'Bandolero' — Watch Video
San Antonio, Texas - Reggae artist Sgt. Remo releases his first full Spanish language single Bandolero. The single is part of the upcoming Reggae SoulJahs Worldwide Vol. 4 compilation album (Spring 2021) by Jah Yute Entertainment. This song is a tribute from Sgt. Remo to a great influence in his career.

The song is a re-lick of the original Bandolero by Pinchers. Sgt. Remo explains “when I first heard Pinchers’ Bandolero I was in high school in El Paso, TX. Before this song, I had never heard any reggae artist mention my city of El Paso or chat any Spanish lyrics. So when I heard Pinchers say ‘pick a likkle tune pon mi banjo, mek a likkle walk in El Paso’ and another part of the song saying ‘tell her buenas tardes señorita, I am the professor’ it blew my mind. From that point on I was hooked, and reggae music became my life.”

In Jan. 29 Jah Yute released the first pre-release single from the album. Ranking Joe’s infectious song Bubble set the tone for the rest of the album. Sgt. Remo’s Bandolero keeps the vibe flowing and will be the last pre-release single before the full album is released in the late spring. The album features music by Chezidek, Ranking Joe, Sgt. Remo, Soulfiya, Ras I-Dre, Ras Levy, and Blacc Sheep. Production and mixing for this release has been handled by Austin, TX’s respected producer McPullish.

In Jah's Name We Pray -Practice gratitude
We can all help to heal the world!
It sounds too good to be true – and yet true indeed it is: we can all help to heal the world! Far more in fact than we may ever have dreamt possible. And one thing is certain: the world sure needs healing.

It doesn’t take a great intellect to see just how troubled this world is. Disease, confusion, depression, hate, violence – and so on – plague almost every inhabited corner of Earth. And why? Because of us human beings.

You might say: “Not me – I don’t cause any of those things.” And maybe you don’t, but we are all part of the human race upon this planet and therefore inseparable from those who do. Not doing any active harm is of course better than the reverse – but it is still not enough. Nor is self-improvement on its own enough – however spiritual it may be. To heal the world, we have to go out of our way to help others to bring about a positive change in their lives as well. There are many ways to do this – and many wonderful people – of all the great religions, and even of no religion – who perform various kinds of invaluable service in this respect.

Spiritual energy can change the world

One of the key ways we help to heal the world is through sending out spiritual energy. This is not about spirituality for its own sake, but is a vital and extremely practical form of service. Spiritual energy can heal others in mind and body – and most importantly also raise consciousness thereby helping people to rise above the weaknesses of greed, materialism, violent emotion, hate, jealousy, desire for vengeance and so on.

One of the best and simplest ways to do this is through prayer. Prayer is about channeling spiritual energy from the Divine Source through yourself and directing it to bring about a predetermined end which is unselfish and wholly spiritual. The quantity and quality of this energy – and also how well it is directed – determine how effective the prayer is. As such, prayer should be viewed as both natural and scientific – but a higher form of nature and science than contemporary orthodoxy is currently able to appreciate.
