|FROM WILMA: Dr. J. C. Raulston was an internationally known horticulturist and professor at NC State University. He also taught classes at other places around the state. At one of these in Asheville he asked us to list five of our favorite plants. Several (including me) listed clematis as one of our favorites. Clematis has been referred to as “the queen of vines”. A flowering clematis can be a show stopper whether climbing on a mailbox post, trellis,|
wall, arbor, or fence; intertwined with shrubs; or allowed to grow along the ground.
Clematis grow best with the tops in full sun with the roots shaded with a ground cover or mulch (keep mulch away from stem). Prepare a generous hole at least 18” across and amend soil with compost or well-rotted manure. Add bonemeal or other organic fertilizers – some gardeners swear by kelp meal. Keep soil consistently moist - not soggy - throughout the growing season.
On a very rainy morning earlier this week, we unloaded dozens of beautiful clematis plants. Now is the best time to add one (or more) to your garden!
PS – the proper pronunciation for clematis is “klem’a-tis”.

Plant a Pollinator Garden
Sat, June 19 at 10 am
With Ruth Gonzalez
Bee sweet to our pollinators, butterflies, and hummingbirds by creating a smorgasbord of beautiful blooming plants and butterfly host plants that provide much-needed habitat for pollinators. With an emphasis on native plants, these lively gardens are full of color, support wildlife, and bring you delight throughout the season.
We’ll discuss garden design principles that enhance the effectiveness of your pollinator habitat, the basic needs of any pollinator garden, and touch on certifying your Pollinator Habitat Certification through Asheville-Bee City USA.
** You will be able to sign up for this workshop starting mid-May.
Cooler Temperatures This Weekend
If possible, protect heat-loving plants like basil and tomatoes from the cool nighttime temps this weekend. Temps are expected to be around 41 to 43 degrees. Heat-lovers prefer to stay above 50 degrees.
