FROM WILMA: Time spent in or near the garden in the evenings can be pleasant especially after a hot, muggy August day. Tending plants or just sitting and taking in sights and sounds can be relaxing. Bill and I occasionally observe beautiful sunsets as we sit outside in the evenings.
Hummingbirds and other birds are active in early evenings and are fun to watch. Every now and then I sit by Sarah’s pond in the evening and enjoy watching fish, frogs, and dragonflies. Water plants both in and around the pond are pretty. Check out our selection of water plants as well as fish and pond supplies.
Petunias, heliotrope, nicotiana, and garden phlox provide a bit of fragrance at dusk and into the evening. Scented geraniums and herbs like lavender, pineapple sage, mints, and lemon balm are fragrant, also. Four o’clocks reseed readily (I have them in an out-of-the-way area) - their fragrant flowers open late in the day and attract nocturnal pollinators.

Around the Garden Center and the Farm...

We have a few fall veggies available at the Garden Center right now – some from our farm and some from another vendor. Our main farm-grown fall vegetable crop should be ready to sell in a couple of weeks.
On our farm we’re also tending to the fall garden mums – grown so beautifully by our farm crew. Our perennial mum crop is filling out. People and pollinators both love these daisy-like fall bloomers.
We’re gearing up for upcoming fall shipments and securing orders for Spring of 2022. You wouldn’t think we’d be placing orders for next March, April, and May in the middle of the summer, but that’s the way it works in the garden center business. It takes time to grow plants!
Weeds shoot up in August. Prevention is key. Take a little time now to weed and mulch your garden beds - so you can sit back enjoy the summer colors and delicious harvest.

|
August 13 & 14, Friday & Saturday - Speaking of Gardening is back in 2021 and Reems Creek Nursery is proud to be a sponsor. We consider Speaking of Gardening one of the most inspirational events we attend each year.
Three fabulous speakers, Claudia West, Ching-Fang Chen, and Janet Draper, will be featured on Friday afternoon. Richard Olson is the presenter on Friday evening (also appetizers and door prizes). Saturday’s event is a Garden Tour of four gardens in the Hendersonville area. Each event is separately ticketed so you can attend just one event or attend all of them. Get ready to be inspired!
