|Visiting the Tallgrass Prairie Preserve|
|FROM WILMA: Over the years November has been a favorite time for Bill and me to travel especially to the Southwest. This year we decided to travel somewhere different and just returned from a road trip to the Ozarks and Oklahoma. We visited several interesting places along the way.|
The Tallgrass Prairie Preserve near Pawhuska, OK was one of those. Originally tallgrass prairie covered over 142 million acres and was a major ecosystem. Today less than 4% of the original tallgrass prairie remains. The Tallgrass Prairie Preserve covers about 40,000 acres and gets its name from big bluestem, switchgrass, and other tallgrasses that provide habitat for a diversity of plants and animals.
At a botanical garden in Ponca City we talked with a couple of volunteers (two energetic “older ladies”) who were planting redbud trees. Redbud (Cercis canadensis) is the state tree of Oklahoma and was a favorite tree of the late Dr. JC Raulston who grew up in Oklahoma. Dr. Raulston was a horticulture professor at NC State, world-known plantsman, and founder of the arboretum at NC State (later named The JC Raulston Arboretum).
Redbud is also native to our area and there is still time to plant it and/or other native trees and shrubs this fall!

Gardener's Poem "You Know Her" at Botanical Garden in Ponca City, OK
You Know Her
Her hands are worn
The feet tired and dirty
She has toiled for all
Yet she surrenders to no weed
She has one goal for the Soul and Soil
You are the Earth I stand on
The pleasure is mine to toil
I will create a beautiful Garden
I am one of many
I am a Garden Lady
I leave you the seeds of tomorrow
