Lenton Roses - A Winter Favorite
|
FROM TANYA: Winter is a time when most gardeners get to take it easy, but for me I have serious withdrawal symptoms. Hellebore or Lenten Rose really cheer me up and remind me that spring is on its way.
Lenten Roses come in a variety of colors - from cream to dark purple – and bloom anywhere from January to April depending on the variety. They are evergreen and bloom in part shade to even heavy shade. Plus, the flowers bloom for such a long time and even make great cut flowers.
We have a new shipment of Hellebores arriving this Friday with a variety of pretty cultivars. I love them all!

FROM WILMA:
*Winter sunshine. How you cheer me
Like an old friend sitting near me.
- From Pastime Poems by Homer Casto, Weaverville poet, 1946
Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow and according to folklore there will be six more weeks of winter. February 5th is National Weather Forecasters Day. Weather is one of the most important factors in the horticultural industry. We spend time monitoring forecasts and try to adapt when possible.
From a low of -9 on February 8th in 1895 to a high of 80 on February 10th in 1932, records from The National Weather Service show that February can be a month of weather swings. There is usually ample moisture with rain and sometimes snow in the month. We welcome *winter sunshine but not extreme warmth as it can cause some plants to break dormancy too early.
This has been a busy week at the Farm - lots of transplanting and seeding. Susan remarked that with the past few days of *winter sunshine you could almost see the plants growing. The Gift Shop is beginning to fill with interesting new displays. Seeds and other garden supplies are here, a new shipment of tropicals arrived last week, and fruit trees and other plant shipments will be here soon. Stop by for inspiration!
