Greenhouses - A Place of Magic
From Wilma:  A greenhouse is a structure made primarily of transparent material in which plants are grown. It is said that in the first century AD Roman Emperor Tiberius loved cucumbers and a primitive greenhouse was built in which to grow them out of season. There is information from the 1450s about winter vegetables being grown in Korea in structures with mica windows and under floor heating systems.

By the 17th century with better techniques for producing glass, greenhouses began to appear in England and the Netherlands. European monarchs built massive greenhouses such as at the Palace of Versailles. In America George Washington had a greenhouse built at Mt. Vernon primarily to grow tropical fruits to impress his dinner guests. Greenhouses were built on estates and used for both practical and ornamental purposes. They were considered status symbols.

About 70 years ago wide sheets of plastic film were developed. From small hobby greenhouses to large commercial ranges this made greenhouse construction easier than glass houses. A greenhouse can truly be a place of magic especially on a cold winter day. Please feel free to stop in and browse through our greenhouses.

Handcrafted Haitian Metal Art

Each fair-trade art piece is handcrafted by Haitian artists who create designs inspired by nature and culture. Using upcycled oil drums the artisans carefully cut and decorate the metal using chisels and hammers - creating pieces imbued with hand-made charm and whimsy. A delightful addition to your home décor or garden, the finished piece is coated with a weather-resistant varnish.

Purchasing these fair-trade art pieces brings real economic growth to the Haitian artists and their communities.
