Watching May Weather
From Wilma:
On May 31, 1984 I attended my daughter Susan's outside graduation ceremony and recall how chilly it was. That evening brought "snow pellets" on the last day of May! According to records from The National Weather Service the low temperature for that date was 34 degrees. While low temperatures that late in the month are unusual, there can be frosty mornings in May.

Mother’s Day is usually considered the “safe” time to plant warm-season veggies and annuals. That date can vary (2nd Sunday in May) from as early as the 8th or as late as the 14th. An “old-timer” tomato farmer once told me he waited until after the full moon in May (on the 15th this year) to plant.

Since Mother’s Day (May 8th) is early this year it is a good idea to monitor the extended forecast for a 10-day period after Mother’s Day.

It’s bird migration season! On Wednesday night over 6,400 (6400!!) birds migrated across Buncombe County and you can click here to see which birds were migrating through our county.

Unfortunately many birds die during migration by crashing into windows that they don’t detect as barriers. Birds are attracted to and disoriented by light. Some cities have a Lights Out program to help save migrating birds, and Lights Out Texas explains how and why these programs help birds in a YouTube video. The Audubon Society offers some simple solutions for homeowners who want to prevent birds colliding into the windows of their homes.
