We Love Basil + Pesto Recipe
Plant basil now – it loves hot summer weather. This absolutely wonderful herb lightens your heart every time you smell it, and it’s even better to eat! We grew an excellent variety called ‘Rutgers Devotion DMR’ on our Farm that is available in 4-packs. It is a sweet Italian basil that is perfect for making pesto. DMR means that it is downy mildew resistant, a disease that can be problematic for basil. We have this and other basil varieties available in our herb section.

Once the basil is about 8” tall start pinching off the top leaves to use in the kitchen. The pinching will cause the basil to become bushier and provide you with a bigger harvest. If your basil starts to flower, be sure to remove the flowers so it will continue to produce the delicious leaves we love to eat.

PERFECT PESTO
Ruth’s favorite pesto recipe from “Southern Herb Growing”.

Ingredients:
1/2 cup Extra Virgin Olive Oil
2 or more cloves of Garlic (more is better!)
2 cups fresh Basil Leaves, hard-packed
1/2 cup fresh Parsley, hard-packed
1/4 cup lightly toasted Pine Nuts (or substitute Walnuts)
1/2 cup grated Romano or Parmesan Cheese

Method:
Place all ingredients in a blender or food processor, and puree. Use immediately for best flavor or freeze in small containers or Ziploc bags for later use. Keep your eye on the nuts when roasting them, because they will burn easily.
