FROM WILMA: By late August there are subtle seasonal changes. Days are becoming shorter, and some plants are beginning to show a bit of fall foliage color. Natives like Joe Pye Weed, ironweed, goldenrod, asters, and others are beginning to flower.
Autumn clematis is a plant I have mixed feelings about – one is native (clematis virginiana – notched leaves) and the other non-native (clematis terniflora – smooth leaves). I have one of each on opposite sides of my deck and the lacy white flowers of both seem to attract lots of pollinators. I did not plant either of these as they reseed easily and pop up in lots of places.
A few Monarch butterflies have been sighted and there is a prediction there will be others migrating south a little later. In addition to milkweed for raising caterpillars, they need flowering plants for nectar. Some birds are beginning to migrate now and depend on seeds, berries, and insects for energy as they travel. Fall webworms can be unsightly on the ends of tree branches but they usually do not damage the tree and are an important food source for birds especially those that migrate.
Doug Tallamy in his books, Bringing Nature Home and Nature’s Best Hope has practical ways we can turn our home gardens into wildlife habitats. Even a small yard can provide benefits. Late summer/early fall are good times to plan and plant your pollinator and wildlife garden.
