Fall is a Great Time to Plant!
|
The Garden Center is super well-stocked with plants right now - and more shipments are arriving soon. The soil is nice and warm this time of year which makes Fall an excellent time for planting. Those warm soil temps give plant roots a jump start, and your plants will be more established come springtime.
Camelias arrived this week!
A beloved evergreen with elegant glossy foliage and showy flowers, camellias enjoy morning sun with protection from the afternoon sun and winter winds. Plant in well-drained soil and enjoy!

Grass Seed - It's Time for Lawn Love!
September is the very best time during the year to seed a new lawn, or to overseed bare spots in your existing lawn. Overseeding annually is a great way to prevent lawn weeds. If you don't fill the bare spots with grass seed then weed seeds will sprout there, so be proactive!
September is a great month to fertilize your lawn too! Apply a slow-release fertilizer like Symphony, Plant-tone, or Espoma Lawn Food available in our Garden Shop.
Edibles For You
Blueberries, Raspberries & Thornless Blackberries
We have a good supply in stock. They're yummy and perfect for fall planting. Plant now so they have a great head start next spring.
Fruit Trees, including pawpaws, persimmons, and serviceberries, are also in stock and going fast!
Fall Vegetable Transplants
Sustainably raised on our Farm - plant a tasty mix of garden plants for fall season gardening. The cool weather makes garden-grown vegetables taste so fresh and vital. Collards and Kale are sweeter after a frost!
Vegetable & Flower Seeds for fall planting.

Garlic and Onion Sets for fall planting.
We have hardneck & softneck garlic varieties, some of which are certified organic. We also have yellow onion sets.
Saffron Crocus
The stigmas of Crocus sativa are the source of saffron - the world's most expensive spice. Saffron adds a luscious floral flavor and striking coloring to curries, risottos and stews. And it is a beautiful fall bloomer!
Pumpkins are here!

The Beauty of Winterberry
|
FROM LIBBY: After the flowers of summer and foliage of fall fade away, we are sometimes left with the dilemma of what shrubs to plant in our garden that add interest even in the depths of winter.
One of my favorites? Winterberry holly (Ilex verticillata)! The female plants of this species boast showy red berries that persist through the winter and will add a pop of color to your yard even on the bleakest of winter days.
Some other bonuses of this plant? Winterberry holly is a WNC native, can tolerate damp soil conditions, is low maintenance, can help attract birds to your yard, and the berry-laden stems are great to use in holiday wreaths and decorations. Winterberry hollies are deciduous and will drop their leaves during winter, but the bright berries make up for the lack of foliage.
Hollies are dioecious plants- meaning that male and female flowers occur on separate plants. Because of this, to get berries you will need to plant both a male and female cultivar to ensure pollination. We have many different cultivars in stock right now, male and female, and would be happy to help you find the right pairing for your yard.
This shrub typically grows in a multi-stemmed, oval habit and our current selection of cultivars range from 3-10 feet in height. Plant your winterberries in full sun for the best fruit set.
