Alki UCC Weekly Messenger September 22, 2022
From the Pastor

Dear Alki UCC,

I have been so inspired learning about the Here’s Hope Project, an organization founded in 2016 by Alki UCC member, Sara Jane. Her mission … to create a supportive online space where families with chronically ill children can share their stories and spread awareness.

Sara Jane also creates bravery/music videos to honor a child’s journey. She recently had the opportunity to film Bryson, a lively six-year-old diagnosed with brain cancer last year. Although he was given a 10% survival chance and endured two surgeries, five rounds of chemo and three stem cell transplants, Bryson is now cancer free! Bryson’s bravery video, which you can watch here, follows the indomitable cancer warrior throughout a typical day.

Sara Jane writes, “I love creating videos for kids because I think they are the most resilient of beings. Kids have this amazing quality of being able to push through anything. I believe that learning about these children's battles can inspire hope in all of us. They certainly inspire hope in me.”

Sara Jane asks parents to share their stories, their joy and their pain. She said to me this week, “These parents show us what true love is.” She gives them a platform to voice their feelings, experiences, as well as wisdom for other parents who have children with chronic illnesses. A parent writes, “Being a childhood cancer mama taught me how to be a better mother, tougher and prouder. Chosen. We were chosen to fight this battle alongside them. Why? I have no idea. But we will do anything for our babies. That's just us. Just keep faith. And never give up. Stand tall and know you are amazing parents!”

Thank you, Sara Jane, for your compassion for these precious families. May we keep these families in our prayers. May God bless and strengthen the work of Here’s Hope Project. May we all be inspired!

In Hope,
Pastor Emily

Alki UCC Food/Fall Clothing Drive
this Sunday, September 25
11:00 am to 3:00 pm
Front Courtyard

When you come for worship, bring your food/clothing and outdoor gear donations.

Our unsheltered neighbors will face tougher times living outdoors as temperatures cool and the inevitable rains return.

The Westside Interfaith Network (WIN), our donations drive partner, requests clean, wearable clothes in all sizes, appropriate for unsheltered men and women. Warm, waterproof outwear is a priority but the following items are also welcome: sleeping bags, blankets, pads, tarps and backpacks.

Please go through your camping gear and consider donating what you don't need or use anymore.

Non-perishable food and hygiene items are distributed through WIN's "Welcome Table," a weekly Saturday meal for low income and unsheltered folks hosted in White Center. This distribution serves as a stop-gap for many people relying on weekly visits to the food bank.
Basic staples are a priority, as well as peanut butter, canned proteins, canned fruits and vegetables (pop-tops preferred).

Many thanks to our generous community for supporting our neighbors in need!
UPDATE/Support Opportunities:
Peruvian Families Seeking Asylum Status
Yanko, our nine-year-old, stoically trudged off to Roxhill school on the school bus last Wednesday, very worried that no one would speak Spanish, along with all the first day jitters of a new year in a new school and all new people.

He bounced off the bus that afternoon and couldn't stop talking about his five new friends who speak Spanish, the new friend who would like to learn Spanish so they can talk, and 'enough' other new friends! It was a wonderful first day! The joy continues.

Meanwhile, Jhadiel, our four-year-old, missed starting Head Start on the first day of school because all his information was not yet 'in the system' due to the teachers' strike.

He was graciously received (in Spanish), given breakfast with the other children, and then sent home. We were told it might be a couple of weeks before he could start, but thankfully he was able to start on Monday. He, too, had a wonderful first day!

On Sunday, the families were invited to go to the end of Fauntleroy UCC's 2nd Time Sale and take any remaining household items for free! They were able to 'shop' for dishes, utensils, cookware, bed linens, towels, lamps, toys, furniture, etc, etc, and store them in the garage of Bob W and Dianne S of Fauntleroy UCC, who chair Fauntleroy's Immigration Task Force.

The families' first priority remains money donations, with housing as a very close second. Their current home will NOT be suitable once the weather turns and they can no longer use the covered patio for meals and activities.

Please use all your networking resources to inquire about housing for these seven sweet people!

In the meantime, we are arranging a couple of medical/dental appointments for pressing needs.

Questions? Ideas? Want to volunteer or make a food/clothing/furniture donation? Contact Vicky S.

High Holy Days
at KHN
Jews around the world will welcome a New Year on Sunday night, September 25. The Jewish year is determined by both the movement of the moon and the sun.

The holiday of Rosh HaShanah begins as the sun sets, starting a 10-day period of intense reflection, introspection and teshuvah (atonement and forgiveness).

The period culminates at the conclusion of Yom Kippur when the sun sets on Wednesday evening, October 5. During this time, Jews reflect on their actions and interactions of the past year, taking a "fearless moral accounting"... asking forgiveness from those whom they may have hurt, and forgiving those who may have hurt them.

Many Jews fast from sundown to sundown on Yom Kippur, wear white, and refrain from wearing leather or other "luxuries."
It is an intense and powerful period of renewal.

The High Holy Days are then followed by two joyous holidays, Sukkot and Simchat Torah. During Sukkot, Jews build temporary huts in which to eat (and sometimes to sleep), celebrating the bounty of their lives, as well as reminding themselves of the fragility of life itself.

On Simchat Torah congregants complete the cycle of the reading of the Torah — finishing the last portion of the Book of Deuteronomy, and beginning all over again at the beginning of Genesis.
