Why is Planting in Fall a Good Idea?
|
FROM LIBBY: Fall is a great time of year to plant deciduous trees and shrubs!
Fall means shorter days and cooler temperatures. The soil is still warm, but the stresses of summer (like heat and drought) are gone, so the overall transplanting process will be less stressful on your trees.
The warm soil is great for encouraging root growth, and even once a tree drops its leaves the roots will continue to grow if the soil is above 40 degrees Fahrenheit. Trees and shrubs that lose their leaves in fall also have the advantage of being able to focus more energy on growing their roots, rather than focusing on above ground activities such as pushing out new growth and flowering.
While watering your newly planted trees in the fall is still important, it is less demanding due to the cooler temperatures and the lack of leaves. By the time next spring rolls around, your tree will have had plenty of time to establish itself and can spend more energy on growth above ground, and its root system will be better prepared for the heat and stresses of summer.
This week we received a HUGE shipment of new trees to join our already well-stocked tree and shrub department. Now is a great time to come by the garden center, pick out some new trees and shrubs for your yard, and get planting!

Houseplant Weather Alert!
|
Chilly nights ahead! Last night was chilly, and starting Tuesday evening the predicted nighttime temps are in the mid-forties for a number of days. Most houseplants prefer temperatures no colder than 50 degrees, so it is time to transition your houseplants indoors.
Tips for moving your houseplants indoors:
- Inspect your houseplants for pests and treat if necessary. We have many helpful products to choose from in our Garden Shop.
- Groom your houseplants before moving them. Remove yellow or damaged leaves, clean the remaining leaves, and trim if needed.
- Indoor light is dimmer, so placement is important when you move them inside. Most houseplants like bright indirect light.
- Do you need grow-lights to keep your plant babies thriving? We have a variety of indoor lighting options available.
- Adjust your watering and humidity levels. Plants may need a little less water indoors, but they will probably need increased humidity once they are inside. To make it easy, we carry continuous water misters in our Garden Shop. Ask us!

Thank You & Fun at Art in Autumn
|
FROM WILMA: Ruth, KY, Bill, and I enjoyed talking with several of you at Weaverville’s recent Art in Autumn. It was fun chatting and answering your inquiries about the plants in our display. We heard several remarks like ”Reems Creek is my favorite Garden Center”, “You have a great staff”, and “Your plants are so
pretty”.
Bill and I have heard some of these same comments at other places. At an event in Black Mountain a few days ago, we talked with a couple of ladies who live a distance away but like to shop at our Garden Center. One made the comment that she loved the atmosphere and especially our “barn” (Gift Shop).
Thank you, gardening friends, for voting us #1 Nursery in WNC. Also, thanks to a great staff for making this possible!
