Alki UCC Weekly Messenger September 29, 2022
From the Pastor

Dear Alki UCC,

Behold!

This is the theme for UCC's Neighbors in Need offering this year, which we will receive during worship this coming Sunday, October 2.

This special offering supports the United Church of Christ’s justice and compassion ministries throughout the United States. Two-thirds of the offering is used by the UCC’s Justice and Witness Ministries to fund a wide array of local and national justice initiatives, advocacy efforts and direct service projects. Through our national Justice and Local Church Ministries office you can find resources, news updates and action alerts on a broad spectrum of justice issues. Working with members of the UCC Justice and Peace Action Network (a network of thousands of UCC justice and peace advocates), Justice and Witness continues its strong policy advocacy work on issues such as the federal budget, voting rights, immigration, health care, hate crimes, civil liberties and environmental justice.

Neighbors in Need also supports our American Indian neighbors in the UCC. One-third of the offering supports the UCC’s Council for American Indian Ministries (CAIM). Historically, forebears of the UCC established churches and worked with Lakota, Dakota, Nakota, Mandan, Hidatsa, Arickara and Hocak in North and South Dakota, Wisconsin and northern Nebraska.

Today there are 20 UCC congregations on reservations and one urban, multi-tribal UCC congregation in Minneapolis, Minnesota. These churches and their pastors are supported by CAIM, an invaluable resource for more than 1,000 individuals from dozens of other tribes and nations who are members of other UCC congregations in the U.S.

In addition to passing the plate this Sunday, contributions to Neighbors in Need can be made any time online anytime via the UCC website here.

Together, we can help our Neighbors in Need.

In Hope,
Pastor Emily
Week of Sept 28 UPDATE
Peruvian Families Seeking Asylum Status
A HUGE shout-out to our Peruvian Families Support team and to all who have already done so much to help our Peruvian families. As they move towards more independence, securing rental housing for them is the most critical need.

Please contact me if you have any leads for a rental home that can (ideally) house the two families – seven people total.

Please continue to prayerfully consider monetary donations – see below for different ways to give.

Bob W and Dianne S from Fauntleroy UCC’s Immigration Task Force joined Karen, Dave and Vicky to meet with the families and develop a realistic budget of anticipated income/expenses. They also met with Vicky and our own Cinda S (representing the Westside Interfaith Network) to discuss plans for reaching out personally to nearby faith communities who might help broaden our ‘village’ and expand our support for these most grateful people.

The team is acting promptly to fill immediate needs, such as scheduling medical and dental appointments. We are also applying for refugee funds to facilitate securing ‘Orca Lift’ cards, part of a new Metro Transit program that provides bus rides for $1 each way for refugees and low-income people.

Volunteer drivers have met Jhadiel and his mom, Yesenia and are now sharing with Karen S and Dave S the twice daily drives to and from Jhadiel’s Head Start program in South Park. Thank you: Julia C, Shannon P, Kathy O and Bob W! We are very grateful for the unique expertise of the Fauntleroy UCC’s Immigration Task Force people who have joined our ranks. Their direct “work the ropes” experience with helping refugees has been vital.

Your continued prayers are always needed for strength and wisdom for our volunteers and safety and hope for our asylum seekers.

Vicky S

High Holy Days (HHD) at KHN
Jews around the world welcomed a New Year on Sunday night, September 25. Shana Tovah to all. May you have a good year!

The Jewish year is determined by both the movement of the moon and the sun. The HHD period culminates at the conclusion of Yom Kippur when the sun sets on Wednesday evening, October 5. During this time, Jews reflect on their actions and interactions of the past year, taking a "fearless moral accounting"... asking forgiveness from those whom they may have hurt, and forgiving those who may have hurt them.

Many Jews fast from sundown to sundown on Yom Kippur, wear white, and refrain from wearing leather or other "luxuries." It is an intense and powerful period of renewal.

The High Holy Days are then followed by two joyous holidays, Sukkot and Simchat Torah. During Sukkot, Jews build temporary huts in which to eat (and sometimes to sleep), celebrating the bounty of their lives, as well as reminding themselves of the fragility of life itself.

On Simchat Torah congregants complete the cycle of the reading of the Torah — finishing the last portion of the Book of Deuteronomy, and beginning all over again at the beginning of Genesis.
— adapted from an article by Rabbi Zari Weiss
