Fraser Fir - A Little History
|
FROM WILMA: With its fragrance, shape, strong branches, and ability to retain soft needles Fraser Fir has been referred to as the “Cadillac” of Christmas trees. Fraser fir (Abies fraseri) grows naturally at higher elevations above 4,500 feet in the Southern Appalachian Mountains. It doesn't grow well in lower elevations like the Asheville area.
Fraser fir as a Christmas tree was actually a spinoff of another use of the tree. Branches gathered from large trees growing on mountainsides were made into wreaths, garlands, and swags. This was mostly a cottage industry in the higher mountain areas of North Carolina, east Tennessee, and southwest Virginia. For convenience, folks began planting seedlings near their homes and as they grew it became apparent that they would make nice Christmas trees.
Around 1960 Christmas tree farms were developed especially in the northwestern mountain counties of North Carolina. North Carolina in now 2nd in the nation in Christmas tree production. When you purchase a Fraser fir Christmas tree you are helping support mountain farmers.
Wilma R. Penland is the co-founder of Reems Creek Nursery and our horticultural mentor.
