Alki UCC Weekly Messenger January 5, 2023
From the Pastor
Dear Alki UCC,

This Sunday we will celebrate Epiphany. We remember the wise ones, the seekers, who followed a star to find the newborn king.

In worship, each of us will receive a Star Word to guide us throughout the year. If you will not be in church this Sunday and would like a Star Word, please request one from the church office. Participants on Zoom will receive their words in the chat.

You may want to place your word somewhere you will see it regularly. Reflect throughout the year on how God may be speaking to you through that guiding word. May we be full of wonder, open to seeing God everywhere, and keep seeking.

In hope,
Pastor Emily
A Blessing for the Seekers

Blessed are you who turn your face up to the sky,
who open your arms to feel the wind,
who notice all the things that we should notice.
Blessed are you who are fluent in wonder
and familiar with awe.
Blessed are you who, even now, dream dreams,
who have not lost hope,
who swear the glass is still half-full.
Blessed are you who plant trees
and sing the harmony,
who tell the children how this world can be magic.
Blessed are you who
walk and seek
and turn over every stone,
pointing out all the corners and colors
that God lives in.
Blessed are you.
Amen.

Peruvian Families Seeking Asylum Status
Michael Ramos, Executive Director of the Church Council of Greater Seattle, met with two of our families Tuesday evening in the church Parlor. He gave us an overview of where the families are in their asylum process and helped us all understand what to expect next.

Michael has been working tirelessly to secure immigration attorneys for our families, an essential requirement to move forward with their cases. Thankfully, he was able to enlist an attorney to consult with these first two families to prepare them for the road ahead and to make recommendations based on what he learns about their situations.

The families are preparing their cases, including evidence of police reports they filed in Peru, etc. Michael warned them that this is a defensive stance, and that it is not easy to win this type of case.

Thank you for your continued prayers and financial support as they navigate this legal situation while also dealing with medical issues, learning English and adjusting to our American culture.

If you can help for an hour one day a week, please let me know.

Remembrance Gathering for Jane Clay
Saturday, January 7 at 2:30 pm
Alki UCC Sanctuary

Prayers of condolence for the family and friends of Alki UCC member Jane Clay, who passed away on Tuesday, January 3.

Daughter Jo has requested a time of quiet reflection and prayer at the church for remembering her mother. It will be a simple and intimate gathering, as she does not want a formal memorial service. You are most welcome to join either in person or via Zoom (contact the church office for Zoom registration link).

Let us pray . . . Holy God, whose ways are not our ways and whose thoughts are not our thoughts, grant that your Holy Spirit may intercede for us with sighs too deep for words. Heal our wounded hearts made heavy by our sorrow. Through the veil of our tears and the silence of our emptiness, assure us again that ear has not heard, nor eye seen, nor human imagination envisioned, what you have prepared for those who love you; through Jesus Christ, the firstborn from the dead. Amen.
