Wondering About Cold-Damaged Plants?
|
Were your plants damaged by the severe cold around Christmas?
This YouTube, Dramatic Winter Damage, by Nashville Public Television Volunteer Gardener is worth taking the time to watch. Nashville, TN is the same planting zone as we are in WNC. This video takes a detailed look at a variety of plants that may have been damaged, what to watch for, what to do, and when to do it (as Wilma said - wait!).
Some quick tips from Dave and Wilma:
- Have plenty of patience.
- Don’t prune until June.
- Fertilize mid-April (not before).
- If we have a dry spell, water your plants (even established plants) to prevent further plant stress.
- If below 15 degrees (and especially if windy) apply an anti-desiccant like Wilt-Pruf to broadleaf evergreens.
- For plant protection - we have Wilt-Pruf, floating row cover, fiberglass rods, and Neptune's Harvest Liquid Seaweed in stock in the Garden Shop.

Be prepared for future cold snaps: Read detailed advice in our Garden Blog about Strategies to Prevent Cold Damage.

FROM WILMA: Staff member, Joel Cole, has one of the most beautiful and intriguing gardens in the area. He recently had a post on social media about spending a mild winter day in his garden “grubbing”. This is a term I often heard my folks say as they prepared/maintained garden spaces by removing unwanted plants, roots, debris, etc.
By this time in winter many of us are anxious to be doing something in our gardens/landscapes. I enjoy being outdoors on most winter days except when it is extremely cold and/or windy - I don’t like wind! Yesterday I took advantage of a mild day and “grubbed” some non-native plants along my driveway. It felt good to be outside.
Of course, winter isn’t over. Last month Mother Nature showed us what she can do in winter and many broadleaved evergreens and a few other marginally hardy plants were damaged in the holiday freeze. Extension Service is recommending to “wait and see” before doing any pruning, removal, etc.
Joel Cole grubbing in his garden - he says "I love grubbing!"
