Alki UCC Weekly Messenger January 19, 2023
From the Pastor

Dear Alki UCC,

In my sermon last week (linked here), I mentioned author Cole Arthur Riley and her book This Here Flesh: Spirituality, Liberation, and the Stories that Make Us. She describes the mutuality inherent in belonging: “There is comfort in being welcomed, but there is dignity in knowing that your arrival just shifted a group toward deeper wholeness.”

Each one of us is necessary and has a purpose in Christ’s body, the church.

When we receive new members on Sunday, January 29, they join Alki UCC in a covenantal relationship — a promise that extends both ways. Our new members decide to join the church and all of us enter into a covenant with them. The whole body shifts toward a deeper wholeness.

During the service, our congregation is asked if they "receive these people into full membership of this church." Here is the response:

"We do! We gladly welcome you into this community of faith, enfolding you with our love and committing ourselves to your care. It is in our relationship with one another, as well as in our worship, study and service, that the life of this church is built.

By the power of the Holy Spirit, may we grow together as disciples of Jesus Christ, courageously sharing God’s love with each other and the world."

I am especially looking forward to the rite of reception for new members, because I myself will become a member! If you are not already a member, and would like to join me, please let me know. Alki UCC would be blessed to have you among us. Your arrival has shifted the church toward deeper wholeness.

In hope,
Pastor Emily

Peruvian Families Seeking Asylum Status
Week of January 19 Update
Since two of our families were vaguely threatened with possible deportation at recent government check-ins, it is critical to secure legal representation for our asylum seekers ASAP.

Despite the best efforts of Michael Ramos of the Church Council of Greater Seattle, we have not been able to engage the services of pro bono attorneys.

This is serious. Asylum seekers have virtually no chance of being granted asylum if they do not have an attorney. Fortunately, a law firm recommended by Fauntleroy’s Pastor Leah has agreed to take the cases of our three families with young children.  We will be asking the families to contribute what they can, but we also need to help with monthly legal payments.

Next step ... expanding our village. Here's how you can help:

Join us for a post-worship conversation at Fauntleroy UCC this Sunday, January 22 with Michael Ramos. We will hear about the legal side of seeking asylum, and then brainstorm fundraising ideas. If you are unable to attend, please contact me with any fundraising suggestions you may have.

Meanwhile, we continue to arrange medical and dental checkups for our young Peruvian children, and follow up on medical issues some of their parents are facing. Thanks to Apple Health insurance for the children and charity care for the adults, bills are low to nonexistent.

From Your Faith Formation Team
The Faith Formation ministry team thanks all the folks who joined in our Advent Bible Study. Even on Zoom we were able to share the scriptures and respond in a safe space. We discovered that even though we have heard the stories before, we have much to learn from our Book and our Faith’s history. The curriculum offered essays, poems, art and research options that gave richness and depth to our time together. Thanks to all who gathered weekly and shared their stories.

We look forward to continuing our Bible Study during Lent using the Sanctified Arts curriculum. A book study is also planned which you will hear more about soon.

Ash Wednesday is February 22. Please join us throughout the Lenten season as we deepen our search and knowledge of our faith.
We welcome your questions and comments about Faith Formation team programs and invite your participation.

Mission to De-Clutter: Major Cleanup Scheduled for End of January
Yoicks!!! During the building closure over the last two years, piles of "stuff" (to use the technical term) grew to critical mass on the Anderson Hall stage (see picture at right) and other areas.

We'll be doing donation/dump runs to clear the clutter at the end of the month, so please speak up asap if you know of specific items that need to find another home in the building.

The Lost and Found Bin, in the corner by the pew opposite the church office, also needs a major re-fresh, so please take a look before it's cleared out as well.
