Photo Moments with the 20th Annual BFG Magazine!
Here's guitarist, band leader Anthony Paule and singer Terri Odabi of the award winning Anthony Paule Soul Orchestra on the Oct 2022 Legendary Rhythm & Blues Cruise.

This highly entertaining soul-blues band captured the hearts of all those lucky to see them onboard. And Paule is so upbeat! A treat! It was also fun for me personally to see and hear an old recording acqaintance of mine, trumpet man Tom Poole.

The band is based in Northern California and has a show at the Sound Room in Oakland, CA on Saturday February 18 plus more Bay Area and other U.S. concerts leading up to their annual trek to Europe in July and August.

CD & DVD Releases
Delta Wires : if somebody told me…
Delta Wires, longtime mainstays in the San Francisco/Bay area blues scene, released their new full-length album, if somebody told me... on Tuesday, January 24.

"Ernie Pinata’s searing and impassioned harp opens this dynamic new CD, If Somebody Told Me from San Francisco Bay Area treasure, The Delta Wires. This 7-piece East Bay-based band has been generating powerful blues for over 30 years, performing in festivals from Italy to Monterey, always with monumental audience response and earning them membership in California’s Blues Hall of Fame.

A combination of tight and highly-polished horns, fierce bluesy guitar and that crying, emotional harp make for a powerful fusion, blending the heartbeat of the Delta with electric sophistication and a full-blooded brass sound. Their latest release includes a number of originals, a few nods to the legendary Sonny Boy Williamson – and even a little Count Basie lagniappe. The best way to experience The Delta Wires is undoubtedly live. Onstage, the Wires always deliver an incandescent experience. But if you can’t catch them live, grab this CD – and hold onto your hats. You’re in for a wild, wild ride! "
- Kathleen Lawton/Crazy ‘Bout the Blues KCSM-FM www.kcsm.organd Blues Foundation’s "Keeping the Blues Alive" award recipient

Soaking in the Memphis offerings at the 2023 IBC
(MEMPHIS, TN) – The Blues Festival Guide (BFG) is proud to be one of the media sponsors of the International Blues Challenge (IBC) that is happening this week in Memphis. The IBC winners (both Duo/Single, and Band) winners will receive an advertising package with the Blues Festival Guide magazine and online platforms as part of their official prize package. If you're at the IBC’s, you’ll see BFG mentioned in the comprehensive IBC program that everyone gets with their IBC ticket.

Our BFG publisher Kaati is in town for the 2023 IBC, the world’s largest blues cutting contest, and she and some friends are also enjoying the sights and sounds of all there is to take in – the Stax Museum, shrimp and grits at a place called Itta Bena's, the Martin Luther King Jr. Museum, the Blues Hall of Fame, Graceland, the Peabody Hotel and more.

During IBC band registration, Kaati, friend Leslie and our local BFG representative Belinda, greeted over 170 bands from around the world as they came into Alfred’s on Beale Street to register. They passed out Blues Festival Guide magazines, Mardi Gras beads, a handbill with a discount offer for IBC participants of 20% off of ads in our annual print magazine. They met blues bands from countries including South Korea, France, London, and of course, from all over the USA.

The IBC quarter finals started Wednesday Jan 25th. We’ll post final results in next week’s issue and will update on our Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.

News From the Slidewinder Roy Rogers
“Happy 2023! Excited to be re-entering the live performance world once again after an amazing 40 + years of touring the globe. It's been quite a ride these last 2 years, and we so appreciate all of your support in getting through this crazy pandemic time.”

Roy Rogers & The Delta Rhythm Kings have a show coming up at the beautiful newly renovated Center for the Arts in Grass Valley Saturday February 11. This show is for Mardi Gras season - so be bold, costume up, and bring your dancing shoes!

Roy says he’s also looking forward to the dates with Bonnie Raitt as her Just Like That tour continues. Look for them Tuesday, March 14 at the Long Beach Terrace Theater (Long Beach, California), Tuesday, March 21 at the Santa Cruz Civic Auditorium (Santa Cruz, California), and Wednesday, March 22 at the SAFE Credit Union Performing Arts Center (Sacramento, California).

Roy Rogers will also be playing at the Big Blues Bender in Las Vegas, Nevada during Sept 7-10.

“Thatʼs not a slide on Roy Rogersʼ pinky, itʼs a time machine. With it, Rogers transports you to the Mississippi Deltaʼs past and future. ......” - Guitar Player

The RR SlideZone Vault is also packed with memories, and the RR team says they'll be putting up some very rare and wonderful live footage and “moments” in TV & Film on the RoyRogersSlides YouTube channel. You can subscribe here and share with friends and family circles as they build this channel.

Just in Case: Yep, I know it's last minute for planning, but January 27th is "National Fun At Work Day." Of course being a working musician can be so very rewarding ... but like any job, it's essential for your survival, mental health and productivity to keep making it fun. The old Groucho Marx saying, "if you're not having fun you're doing something wrong," is a good reminder. If you work in an office, you already know that some fun-time builds camaraderie, which in turn makes you and others happy and can encourage creativity, loyality, etc. etc. So take some time to celebrate and have a little fun. We certainly can all benefit from this kind of holiday...
Oh, and look at that... January 28th is "National Kazoo Day" HA!... Gotta love it! If you bring these to the office, hope your boss has a sense of humor. Try humming their favorite song.
